Help Video Editing Help...

Good morning folks,

I just need to know if it is possible at all to edit video taken with our Incredible (ex. shorten, decrease size, split into separate videos, etc.). I've searched the Market and can't find any app to edit videos. Because the resolution is so large, it is difficult and in some cases impossible to send a video via SMS, MMS or email because of its size. The smallest video setting is 1MB, which at the lowest resolution, is only 9 seconds long. That's horrible. I want to be able to record a regular video and edit it. Please help if anyone knows whether or not this is possible. By the way, despite the issues everyone else may have, I luv this phone...had it since day 2 of pre-order launch and never thought twice about returning it. Thanks!!!

I was having a similar issue. First off let me say I'm not sure about editing tools on the phone.
What I do know is that I was told by HTC CS that the best way to record is for me to open the message or mail, add attachment, video, from camera and start recording from there so I don't exceed the limit the message can handle. They also suggested I keep the Resolution of QVGA (320x240) and MPEG4 Encoding type.
It can be a pain to point and shoot quick video but now I leave my vid camera settings on the 320x240 setting just in case because chances are if I want to record something really nicely, I'll have time to adjust the resolution. HTH!

Extra note, in this manner I am allowed a full minute of recording to send in texts before it says I'll reach my limit.
The camera will do a countdown backwards if you use this way instead of the standard counting forward in time.

Thanks saphyre, I'll try that. My text size limit is the max at 1.2MB, so the video has be smaller than that. I test recorded a video at the smallest resolution for 30 seconds, and it was a tad over 2MB. That's still too large, so I set the video limit at 1MB at the lowest resolution, but that only gives me 9 seconds of recording. I'm going to try by opening a fresh message first like you said and then recording, like you suggested.

To the second poster, my laptop has windows 7 64 bit. What's up???

Right, you want max message size to be the 1.2 M. Mine's set for phone storage. Keeping the video resolution at the QVGA allows me to take quick video if I need to.

Mind you what I said in my previous post is done though the stock Message app. I cannot seem to get my Handcent to take video like I said before but if I record within about the same time as I would have for the standard messaging app, I can still attach and send to friends over text. I imagine the same for email although it's super rare I email a video.

The short answer is yes you can edit the video from the phone. I have done this with multiple phones for years. There are various programs out there that will enable you to edit the video, the problem is that most video programs installed on your PC won't do the trick because most of those are either limited to avi or wmv file types. If you have a Mac, you can just drop the video file into Imovie and start editing.

If you have a PC there are a couple of options and they will usually cost you some money but depending on what you want to do it may well worth it. ( I started making online video about 4 1/2 years ago now so I am pretty familer with encoding software, etc I have 3 video cameras, a JVC, and 2 panasonics, one of which is a DVX 100B, oh and a Kodak zi8 and a Sony camera that also shoots mp4 HD video...I guess that is 5 video cameras!!)

Anyway back to editing on a PC, you will first need a program to convert the 3gp file to an avi file. You can probably find a free program to do this. After you convert it you can use the video program like window movie maker or any other video editing program to edit your movie!

Some video editing software can support the 3g files so you don't have to convert them, I think Coral Digital Studio and a couple of others. However, I use Sony Vegas, which in my opinion is the best software for video editing on a PC.

What I use is Quicktime pro to convert the video file, edit in Vegas then output as an Ipod compatible file to the web on my site. (When I want to edit)

If anyone has any other video editing questions in general I would be happy to try to help.

I don't think they want something to edit the videos on a PC or Mac. They want to edit them on the phone because they were having size issues with sending videos.

I didn't mean this in direct reply to OP but to the above poster to point out what the OP said that made me think this.

Double thanks saphyre. I tested recording the video through a new text in the stock app and I got a full minute of recording (much better than 9 seconds LOL). I'm waiting to see if the recipient got it. They're on ATT, so the message lag with that is a whole other post. VZW to VZW or VZW to Sprint is almost instant with pic/video msg. VZW to ATT is hit or miss. Though, I'm a hancent message person. I have to use the stock app to send pic/vids to ATT customers. Anyway, thanks for the help with the video. I still wish there was a way to edit videos stored on our phones. We can cut songs and make ringtones. We should be able to cut movies/videos to make tiny clips. I digress...

OH! One more thing, if you record through the video app itself and choose share, you can CHOOSE Handcent to make it easier to send rather than having to attach.

And I heard Qik will allow you to edit but haven't tried it.

Ah....I guess I saw video editing and I went on a tear...

There are not a lot of phones that can do in phone editing, the new Iphone, Nokia has had a couple. I think the problem with writing an app to edit movies is that there is a lot of stuff going on with editing video, add in trying to make transistions, etc and it's a rather large app and I am sure a battery drain plus then you have to render it out once you have edited it.

I also use Qik, for sending video messages its drop dead simple and you can cross post to facebook, youtube, twitter, etc.

Sorry...left for a bit longer than anticipated. I was just going to say that you can record the video, then connect your DInc to your laptop and transfer the video over. Then use a video editing software to do what you need to do to the video and send it off.
