to get my X working. I know I will have to activate it with a phone call but after that, I'm lost as this is my first Android and my first smart Phone.

I have a gmail account. I have My Verizon and Backup Assistant but what will I have to do beyond activating it?

I'm hoping I can accomplish this after buying the X on line as my corp. store charges $50.00 more than on line which is another thread/question.

I am an existing customer and didn't even have to call anyone, the *228 worked perfect. I synched my backups on the vzw website. Then when I set up gmail it imported my contacts to my X.

Next would be searching through the market to find the free apps you want.

I'm a retuning customer, and I only had to do the *228 (Phone should do it for you as part of the activation process) and I was good to go. I would recommend getting the appbrain app and the fast web installer app first, this way you can browse apps via appbrain.com and install them over the air from your computer, works great!!!

Man, y'all have eased my mind. That doesn't sound any more difficult that buying and activating my current Samsung Alias 2 feature phone. I was(am) concerned about the gmail deal but I don't have a Facebook, a Twitter, etc, account of any kind so syncing with them will not be applicable right? Of course, I'll ask for help with setting up any over whelming apps/features, etc and I know the community will help.

I've been collecting apps info and recommendations so which ones to download shouldn't be a problem. Making them work might but I'll ask again for help.

I don't have any of those things like twitter or facebook, so no issues there. If you have your contacts backed up via the Verizon backup assistant app, you can use that on the Droid X to bring them over, or just get your contacts into gmail, if not already there.
