Root Rooting question...

I've considered rooting my N1, but I have a concern that stops me from going ahead with it. If I root, and then add Cyanogen's add-on "Makin' Bacon", but not a flashed ROM, can I still update to the newest firmwares when they come out? I'd like the root access to modify things like my CPU speed, but I'm pretty happy with my overall appearance and what-not of the stock ROM.

As far as appearance goes, cyanogenmod looks almost completely stock. The thing about it is that you CAN customize it 100%. I too like the LOOK of stock froyo and that's what my N1 looks like. TBH my wife still doesn't know she's running CM6. All I told her was that I was gonna make her notification bar black to prevent screen burn.:D

Yeah, I've seen the mods. They are quite nice. I just didn't want to have to go through all of the trouble of flashing a ROM and screw it up on accident. I just wanted to unlock the bootloader and add the add-on. I was worried if I did this that I would no longer be able to receive OTA or manual updates. I'm not even sure where to find a tutorial for flashing my ROM.

Once you flash a custom recovery, which is required to flash a custom ROM, you cannot receive OTA updates. That however is a good thing since they will usually kill your root. Plus, I never waited for an OTA. The new builds usually come out as manual updates WAY before they come out as OTAs. As far as tutorial, theres an excellent one right here that lets you keep your warranty. Just make sure you read it all the way through and read the responses as they contain additional info.
Root N1 WITHOUT Unlocking Bootloader!
