Root Radios, Kernals, ROMs and Bootloaders

Thanks for your patience as I ask for some clarification on ROMs, radios, bootloaders and kernals.

I am currently running a rooted stock incredible. I want to try CM6, the 2.2 leak, and the 2.2 lite or Sky Raider. I know there are issues with having the right radio and kernal with all these.

If I understand it right, the stock kernal will work with all of them. If I wan't to try another kernal I would be limited to kernals made to get along with those specific roms. Is this correct?

I have the 1.x radio right now, which will work with CM6 right? If I go to the 2.2 leak it will upgrade it to 2.x, which will work with 2.2 lite or Sky Raider. However I am I right in thinking to go back to CM6 or stock from 2.2 leak I will have to downgrade the radio? Also, I will have to downgrade the bootloader as well?

Whew, this is all so confusing. I have looked for one place that has all this info, but can't find it anywhere.

Ok, here goes, I'll try my best.

You might as well update the radio first to 2.xxx. You will need that version for certain things (camera, camcorder, etc.) to work in many froyo roms. Plus you have to unroot first.

The kernals that are out (hydra) don't work with the 2.2 roms, so to overclock, undervolt etc, you'd have to stay with a 2.1 based rom. You might as well leave the kernal aspect of things alone for now until some stable .32 kernals are released.

Here's a link to xda ([ROM]*07/27 Leaked OTA* Stock 2.2 with Sense [SOME BUGS!!] - xda-developers), that has all the files to unroot, flash ota and radio, reroot and flash the leaked 2.2 rom. I personally have been using adrynalyne's evo port (http://androidforums.com/roms-incredible/138145-evo-port-test-roms.html ) and it has been working beautifully.

Of course, the most important step of all, NANDROID BACKUP

*If anything needs to be corrected, please do so as I am not an expert, but my phone still works :D

Enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the reply. How does the 2.x radio work with CM6, do I need it, does it work with it? I haven't found anywhere that spells that out.

I did do a Nandroid backup right after root. It what state does a Nandroid restore leave my phone? As in, does it undo rom changes, radio changes ect?

A nandroid should restore the phone (everything) to the exact same as it was when you created the backup. So when you restore, if you were to restore to the backup you made immediately after rooting, that's where you'll be.

The updated radio isn't really necessary for CM6, but it shouldn't hurt anything either. Like I said, you might as well update it because you'll most likely need it to run a number of the newer roms that are floating around if you decide to go on a flashing spree.

Just to clarify, then, a Nandroid will back up what, exactly? Compared to say, Titanium Backup or MyBackup Pro? I paid for both of those, so now I'm wondering if I wasted my money, heh!

And none of them touch kernels and/or hardware drivers (ie radio update)?

As far as I know Nandroid backs up everything down to the system, the others backup aps that can be restored over any rom.

That is good to know. My biggest worry about installing the leak is that it is seems hard to go back to stock to get the real update or to use a 2.1 rom, but if all I have to do is do a Nandroid restore to get back to stock that is easy.

Do you download Nandroid from the market and create a backup to an external HDD or expanded memory in the phone? Also, what ROMs are you guys running? I am trying to put together my research so that I can finally root my HTC Hero and install a ROM that runs fast and still has functionality. Any thoughts? Thanks...

You should check out the Hero forums to find out about Hero Roms. For my Incredible, Nandroid came with Clockwork Recovery, which came with the program I used to root. It is not in the Market, as far as I know.

i was in a similar position for a while where i wasn't sure if i wanted to mess with the unrooting and especially the leaked radio yet i wanted froyo on my phone. i decided to wait for the official ota that has a radio included and for now i installed cm6 test 8. i've been running it since last night and the only things that don't work is the camcorder which i can live without and the led nofications, which kind of sucks but still not a deal breaker. although some of these froyo roms that require the updated radio are looking pretty good, everyone seems to be liking adrynalyne's evo port.
