Root How to know if my phone is rooted?

Good day, I just bought a Motorola Milestone, I was expecting a firmware 2.0 version with it but when I check on "About Phone" this is what I got:

I asked the lady on the store but she doesn't know anything about the milestone. Is my phone rooted already or not? Why is it on 2.1 and I tried installing an App downloaded from torrent just for testing purposes if it will work and it did, I was able to install hungry shark. So is my phone rooted or what?

Another thing about rooting, does rooting have different versions depending on who created that kind of root or process? Similar to PSP custom firmwares? I'm a total newbie. Thanks anyway..

Welcome to Android Forums! If you bought the phone new it is not rooted. There are different rooting processes for different phones because different phones have different softwares and because there's more than one way to skin a cat, so to coin a phrase.

Let me send this post over to the Milestone forum for you so folks can take a look at your numbers and give you more info.

Honestly, when I got this phone, I don't think it's new, box was dirty and there's no more warranty card already. It's just that I can't find this phone anywhere but just one store and there's only one available so I took it.

I did some reading and did that "su" thing using a terminal app, it says "permission denied" so that means my phone is not yet rooted right? It's just Android 2.1? Anyways I can still root this one to 2.1 right? Thanks

Regarding the countries under 2.1, do I need to choose that exact country of where my Milestone was made? I checked the back on the battery slot, it says Made in China but I'm not really sure. Since I'm from asia, can I just select any sbf from "South-east Asia"? Thanks in advance...

No where you are now and what carrier you use.. Some are cross reversible.

From your firmware configuration version, it seems you have the Italian version. So, you can flash the Italian SHOLS_U2_02.38.0 sbf which you can download from this link.

Well I'm from the Philippines, South East Asia will do (SHOLS_U2_02.36.0). I'll study this very carefully so I can start rooting.

I was able to root it to 2.1 already using the tutorial here on androidforums. Thanks guys! Luckily I didn't had any problems on the process..
