I tried, rooted quick and easy. all seemed fine. BUT about 2 - 3 hours in after downloading a baseband, all hell broke lose. maybe related to clockworkMD, maybe related to this. no one can say. so, went and did the root the old fashioned way - which was a 100% PITA - and now it seems solid.

did it work? yeah. did it cause the issue with some faulty root? unknown.

In my opinion, you should have at least some knowledge of what you are actually doing when you root. It's bad enough that rooting is pretty easy on the Droid and there are endless threads about "I followed such and such walk through and my Droid is bricked!" but if people need literally zero knowledge to root then it's only going to get worse.

There really isn't enough emphasis on learning how to use recovery software properly or even basic knowledge of what unlocking root access actually is. I think the one-button root application is really going to cause a lot of problems when people start screwing around flashing things when they don't know what they are doing.

+1. i think it's great for us that have been rooted since day 1, or day 26 for me, but it's like letting the lunatics run the asylum....lol.

forced the update to 2.2 first then took a risk with easy root and it worked like a charm. I am running stock 2.2 and rooted!

So if you use ER and load a ROM like BB, and you use the "unroot button" does this remove the rom and everything?

for some of the "haters".. not sure why there is such an allegiance to doing it the "original" way. heck, even the original way has tools that make rooting possible.. software someone made to make it easier, directions to follow, so following your logic we should all have to go back to the stone age? Better not use your calculator, do it the long hand way huh? I want to root, does not mean I have to know all the ins and outs. Sure, it helps things jibe, but Easy Root is a tool just like the one we all love.. the Droid. Itself it is nothing but a tool that makes your life easier...

Easy Root is a great concept & it will go this way as the "real" way is cryptic, tedious, timely, and frankly... a hassle. Why would you not want to make it easy to root? Does it prove something if you did it the "real" way? I am busy, things I want to do, if I can root in 5 minutes or 55, what would you choose? For me, easy choice and it is not cutting corners, it is just using a better method to get to the end.

Think about the fact that you root and then YOU relay on a guy like Pete or Chevy to put a trick ROM together for you so you can even make rooting desirable. Why don't YOu do learn to compile a ROM? Get it? Why should you even have to. You shouldn't.. so anyone hating on the app or the concept needs to slow their roll and think about how much they use these tools, but for some reason, 'this' tool is not cool to use? I hope they dial this app in and get it 100%. it will be awesome!

Yeah, you are entirely correct, but I'm not able to comment on the app itself seeing that it wouldn't let me install it yesterday night or this morning and I can't try again because its been pulled from the market...I even bought SetCPU and Rom Manager(Premium), I'm such a fail :b

Google pulled Easy Root from the market for now. The dev is still looking into why they did it, seeing as rooting is legal now, they had no reason. But its basically a 1touch root app. You touch one button and BAM!, you are rooted. I would still look into the rooting guide on this forum because a little knowledge of rooting would help.

I was never saying everyone should do it the hard way, but if you don't really know what you're getting into when you root you are just asking for trouble. My point is that it is easy to get in over your head and make a mistake when installing a ROM or something and then have a non-functioning phone until people on this forum manage to diagnose the problem and help fix it.

It's virtually impossible to brick the Droid, but its not hard at all to mess things up to the point where someone who used a one touch root app won't be able to fix their phone and don't even know enough about what they have done to explain what is wrong.

If you are going to root, no matter what method you are using, you should educate yourself first. A one touch root app removes the need to know even the slightest detail about what you are doing.

I will say that there are pros and cons to using the one touch root app.

In my opinion it makes it very easy for droid owners to root their phone and utilize their phone to it's full potential which is fantastic, more people we have rooted the more happy droid users we have. and maybe even future devs. Props to the dev who made this possible.

I also think that it takes out the "nervousness" of rooting your phone which (in my opinion) is not a good thing. I am glad that i was nervous at first because it made me read, read, and re-read everything I could so that I didn't screw up my phone. Even though there is a small chance of doing this, i was still worried enough to do my research and weigh the options. Everyone knows we are all tired of seeing the same threads asking the same questions about which rom is the best for first timers, and what is root, etc...(i'm even guilty of starting these threads) I think the more nervous you are the more you read and the less of these threads we are going to see. Because when you do your reading for whatever reason to learn about this process, the more you understand, the more confident you feel, and the more you enjoy the devs who make this stuff possible.

I used the EasyRoot app, and it seems to have worked fine. I had a few issues but I dont think it was related to anything it did. Now running 2.2 with the CyanogenMod ROM and NexTheme. Love it! Now I just need to learn about OC'ing my Droid and I will be in set.

Only problem I had was trying to find recovery on it, only found the stock recovery (triangle with ! in it) just have to install clockwork right? other than this everything worked like it was supposed to.

FWIW, I did root the old school way after having some issues with the root I did via Easy Root - though there is no proof Easy Root was the issue - and IN FACT, the issue I had in my Easy Root root were problems with clockworkMD not allowing a boot into recovery..

well guess what, that is still and issue now, and occasionally I have to reflash clockworkMD after flashing SPRecovery, yet I did an old school root post the Easy Root. My Point = many people with root issues it seems more come back to issues with clockworkMD and recovery boots and clockworkMD not flashing or staying flashed. That itself, if you read around here, is an issue for many many root people, not just Easy Root people. So, I think that Easy Root might be getting the finger pointed at it when in fact clockworkMD and issues in ROM Manager - another app we all use - might more be the culprit.

But I don't think rom loading or asset overwrites are for the 'average' user. On droid life a guy fubar'd his phone after trying to load a rom after easy root, best to know how to create a recoverable backup of your phone in the first place.

Worked fine and quickly for me. When I went to load a custom ROM, I had the clockwork issue where somehow I went back to the native update mechanism.

The way I handled that was to go back to a previous version from ROM manager - it now works fine. Guess there is a bad file in there I need to replace, but too lazy to figure it out.

So all in all for 99 cents, not perfect but got it working.

Only FRG01B is currently available to manually update if you don't have root.

All it does is give you root access on 2.1/2.2 without requiring you to flash a custom already-rooted firmware. What you do afterwards is up to you.

All the FUD about this tool is equivalent to "I got root access on a Linux server and I did rm -rf / and now nothing is working -- my root access was broken!!"
