Gmail app force closing

out of nowhere this morning, my gmail app started force closing. i haven't installed any new apps in the last couple days.

when i tap the icon, it'll load the first few messages in my inbox then it'll pop up with "the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly. please try again." on the rare occasion that it doesn't FC right away, it'll load the first few messages and at the bottom of the screen will say "No connection" so i'll tap the "retry" button next to that, and THEN it will FC.

(and i'm not 100% sure, but I think that same process FC kills off my gchat, too.)

Any ideas? i'm non-rooted running 2.1 still (no froyo yet).

I had the same issue yesterday and today. I tried clearing data and cache but no help. Doing some web searching, it seemed like a hard reset was in order but due to the warning about doing a hard reset on 2.1 and loosing 3G, I decided to manually update to 2.2 even though it has been pulled by Veriz. After doing the update, gmail has been working normally so far. I know it's not a solution but thought you should know some others were having the same issue.

Thanks, pizz! Everything you just said was my exact same thought process. Haha. I only get a couple of emails to my gmail occasionally (it's not my primary email address) so I'll just suck it up until the final build of 2.2 rolls out OTA.

I really appreciate the post here, pizz! My next thought was to start removing and reinstalling apps to find a possible conflict. If you hear anything else about this, could you please update this thread? And I'll do the same if I come across any other info.

Have Droid X problem just started with me as well tonight. Called Verizon and they are thinking it is a software issue possibly with gmail. I do have alot of emails in my inbox and when I clean them out to another folder it seems to solve the issue. Not sure if my inbox is too large and it crashes it or google has done something to mess it up. Hopefully they will get this fixed because this sucks.

Thanks for the update!

Well, as far as inbox size, I only keep about 10 or so emails in my inbox and the rest are in other folders... I dunno...

seems google knows about the issue and is working on it. Here is a thread to google.

force close in gmail - Google Mobile Help

Thanks, witzcap. I know better than to call VZW for something like this, but I did anyway just to report it.

Me: Gmail app keeps FCing.
VZW: Yes, we're aware of this issue. You can try to do a hard reset.
Me: What about the reports of losing 3G after doing a hard reset on Android 2.1?
VZW: Yes, there are reports of that. Would you like to look into other options to upgrade to 2.2 to try to solve this?
Me: Um, didn't VZW stop updating people because of all the problems this first build of 2.2 was creating? I'm probably better off just living with the gmail glitch for the time being.
VZW: Yes...But you do have the other options I we just discussed.
Me: Well, those aren't really options as they seem to create more problems than they solve and they're not guaranteed to fix my problem. I really just wanted to bring this to your attention and report it.
VZW: Thank you. I will note it to your account and I also recommend reporting it to Motorola. All of the software comes from them and we just distribute it.

Ugh, more frustrating than anything...

I just had this issue with my phone. I found my fix on another forum, just figured I would share it. The fix I used was to clear the data from Google Talk Service and Storage. Rebooted and that was it

Interesting. You're the first person for whom that actually worked. Heh. I researched probably for about two hours yesterday and everyone who tried that (including myself) had no luck with that. Glad you're back to normal though!
