Has anyone been successful in getting Sprint to drop the $10 per month for 4G because they live in an area where there is no 4G? I understand they call it a "premium" charge but we all know its bullshit because most of us are really just paying for those that do have it.

I guess I am in the minority as I don't have a problem paying the fee. I actually use this phone so much more than I used my old phone that I have easily recouped the $10. In my eyes, Sprint said if you want the EVO it is an extra $10 a month - so you know this going into it. Why complain AFTER you get the phone? Just don't get the phone. Oh and I do not live in a 4G area either.

If I recall it's not for the 4g but it's to use the phone.

People act like $10 is absolutely devastating to their account. It's nothing really. Also, Im guessing it helps to get 4g up and running faster.

Man... I'm going to refrain myself... I really am... Ive had the phone for about a month now... I'm not among those that don't mind paying for something I won't get regardless of what the price it is...

I was told by the Sprint Customer Service rep that the $10 per month is for 4G... I don't get 4G so I don't want to pay the fee...

The $10 isn't for 4G, but it isn't a premium data fee. Sprint wants to raise rates most likely, but doesn't want to let its users break their contracts for free, as they are just getting positive subscriber growith. This is an elegant solution, as of right now, the only people paying the $10 had to opt in, so nobody gets to void their contract.

This makes a lot more sense than outsourced customer service reps telling you the $10 fee is to use 4G...

Think of this $10 now as an investment. It will help you get 4g in your area faster. May suck now but in the long run you reap the rewards.

Also, we already pay less per month than other people with inferior phones and service.

when i talked to sprint c/s about getting into an EVO after all my problems with a hero, they didnt seem to want to budge, yet every reason they gave me to pay the extra $10 was crap...

1) it has a 8mp camera - Im not a professional photographer and if i were, i would have a camera dedicated to that, not a phone. whether its 8mp or doesnt have a camera, i dont care
2) It comes with swype - its free if you register on their website. Also realized that, while using shapewriter, if you live in a humid area (that i do) its entirely useless. your finger sticks to the screen too much to use it efficiently
3) premium data - I have a computer that gives me access to all the data i need. There has never once been a time in my life that the time waiting bw 3g and 4g connection would have any impact in my day at all. even living in an area with 4g, im hearing people with evos constantly saying they are on 3g a majority of the time
4) the amazing screen - again, I own a computer and a TV. if i want to watch a movie, it will be on my 40 inch tv, not my 4 inch phone. Also, i like to have my phone in my pocket, not my briefcase. I dont want to have to start wearing jnco's again to fit my phone in my pocket (cmon, i know you guys remember those! haha)

All I want is a phone that works as it should. when i hit "call" i want it to call, not freeze for 30 seconds and think about it. I want a phone to work with the BT in my car. my last 2 phones could do this, makes no sense that a new phone now cant. Im not opposed to paying extra if i have a use for it, but there is NOTHING that the evo can do that my hero cant do if it works right

not on the list for 2010 though :( ugh i have heard 4g is so awesome too!!

not so fast... This is to begin this fall in Phoenix, AZ:

Clearwire expects to conduct tests across three key areas:

  • FDD LTE: Clearwire intends to conduct FDD LTE (Frequency Division Duplex) tests using 40 MHz of spectrum, paired in 20 MHz contiguous channels, of its 2.5 GHz spectrum. Clearwire expects to confirm the capability to produce real-world download speeds that range from 20-70 Mbps. This is expected to be significantly faster than the 5-12 Mbps speeds currently envisioned by other LTE deployments in the U.S., which will rely on smaller pairs of 10 Mhz channels or less.
  • TDD LTE: Clearwire will concurrently test TDD LTE (Time Division Duplex), in a 20 MHz configuration, which is twice the channel size currently used in its 4G WiMAX deployments.
  • WiMAX and LTE: Clearwire will also test WiMAX co-existence with both FDD LTE and TDD LTE to confirm the flexibility of its network and spectrum strength to simultaneously support a wide-range of devices across its all-IP network.

Then why do you feel you need an EVO? Just get another smartphone, it's not like they're forcing you to get it.
