2.2--Based on what I've seen and heard from other members on here I'd have to nominate KaosFroYo, the latest version is 32 [ROM]KaosFroyo V32 [08/30] [FROYO] - xda-developers

2.1--I personally LOVE xtrSENSE 4.0.6.1. It's sense based but very fast and a lot of the "bloatware" has been removed. [ROM] [8/20/2010] xtrSENSE4.0.6.1 [apps2sd,oc,jit,flash10]- HTC Sense - xda-developers

That is a loaded question, but I agree with Wormdoes. I love the XtrRoms, they are fast and stable, Kaosfroyo is a great rom if you are into the 2.2.

Of course, this is all subjective, but:

1. Probably Ivan's Official 1.0. Just wipe data, flash and go and you have stock Eris, but much better.

2. I really think that its kaos froyo. KF seems to have new features added before the other ROMs, and seems to be more feature-complete - at least the features that I like. I especially like that i can count on notifications flashing the trackball reliably with this ROM; with never having to worry about restarts. Saying that, it's been a while since I have tried CELB Froyo (and I really like the work that the developer, Conap, did with the original CELB eclair ROM), I haven't flashed Cyanogen Tazz yet, and I haven't flashed Nonsnsikal, though I think I probably will not; I tend to not like themed ROMs that go too far from stock. But, that's just me ...

3. For me, xtrROM. I think that the developer continues to do a fantastic job perfecting this ROM.

4. Right now, Kaos Froyo. I started running it three weeks ago, intending to run it briefly just to try it out. I did go back and flashed the latest version of xtrROM last week, but within a day I went back to KF. For whatever reason, I like it best.

Saying that, I may take the time to try out the other Froyo ROMs in the next few days.

2.1 refers to Android 2.1 (also known as Eclair) (Android 2.0 Platform Highlights | Android Developers / Android 2.1 Platform | Android Developers)

2.2 refers to Android 2.2 (also known as Froyo) (Android 2.2 Platform Highlights | Android Developers)

They are just different versions of the Android operating system. The custom ROMs are built with the respective versions as their base.

Thank You Scary Alien, so if I am understanding if my unrooted Eris is running 2.1. Would it possible to flash a 2.2 ROM so I can take advantage of WIFI tethering ? So all the ROMs out there how will I know which version Android they are for ? Sorry for sounding stupid.

1) I can't really give an answer on this one myself. Most roms I flash usually are just the rom or the rom with a flash for google apps. No real big deal in my opinion.

2) I've been dealing with mostly 2.2 roms here lately and I keep coming back to KaosFroyo. Other people will have other opinions, but this one just "feels right" to me.

3) xtrROM has been praised up and down for how great it is. This would probably be a safe bet for a 2.1 rom.

4) Pre 2.2, I used White Widow 4.6. I was content with it, but that was my very first rom so I guess you could say it held a special place in my heart. Now that I'm flashing 2.2 roms like crazy, I would have to say KaosFroyo. All the other roms usually had some quirk to them that just didn't sit right with me.

Yes, you can flash a either a 2.1 or a 2.2 ROM (or you can jump back and forth like a lot of us do).

You actually do not need 2.2 to get WiFi tethering; there are WiFi tethering apps for 2.1, and, in fact, I think that most of the root 2.1 ROMs include a WiFi tethering app. For example, the great xtrROM 4.0.6.1 includes both wired and wireless tethering apps.

While it is true that FroYo (i.e., 2.2) includes native support for WiFi tethering that 2.1 did not, I do believe that none of the 2.2 ROMs for the Eris right now support that built-in tethering feature - they use the same third party apps that 2.1 ROMs do.

The best place (IMHO) to find ROMs for the Eris is at xda-developers Eris development forum. Look for the threads that have [ROM] in the title; the first post of each of these threads will tell you which Android version that they are, whether they include Sense or are vanilla Android, and most of the features. A sort of glossary of terms you might find:

apps2sd: includes support for installing applications on your SD card. Read the post carefully to see how it is implemented, and note that all Froyo ROMs support apps2sd by default

JIT: Just In Time compiling. The ROM uses this technology to speed the java interpreter used when running applications. Again, a default feature of Froyo ROMs. Note that some older apps do not run well in JIT-enabled ROMs; Pandora used to have an issue with JIT, though perhaps that is no longer the case.

OC: the ROM supports overclocking of the CPU, letting the phone run the CPU faster than its default 528 MHz clock speed

LWP: the ROM support live wallpapers

AOSP: Android Open Source Project. Rather than using the customized Android build that HTC used on the Eris, these ROMs are built using (or based on) vanilla Android source code

JulyOTA: For either Sense based 2.1 ROMs, or ROMs with most of the HTC Sense customizations. The ROM includes the features that HTC included in the July Over The Air update that was delivered to stock Erises

Hopefully, any other acronym that you read is obvious.

There is also an option that has not (yet) been addressed: that would be to root your phone as it is without having to replace your O/S with a custom ROM just so that you could install and run root-only apps like wi-fi tethering.

This way, you could keep what you already have and just have this ability. Is this something that more closely suits your needs? If so, let us know and we'll point you in that direction.

I have the stinking no ring bug and super lag which is killing me. The wifi tether was a bonus. Does the Plain Jane ROM support wifi tether ? Sense base ROMS are the pinch and stretch feature I think right ?

You can get wi-fi tethering at anytime you are rooted...its just an app that is usually baked-in inside the custom ROM or is a free download from the Market.

The pinch-and-stretch thing you mentioned is the "leap" function (although there is a pinch-and-zoom in many of the apps for resizing the display), I believe...I would guess that the "leap" is only a feature of Sense...

I'm surprised that you are still having the no ring bug (silent-call?)... Did you not get the July OTA update? I thought that issue was pretty-much resolved with the 17-July-2010 OTA update...(can anyone confirm this?). I never had the silent-call bug and didn't even after I rooted and was running Ivan's 1.0.

There's several ways to skin the lag-cat (even without rooting--but the non-root things don't always help everyone and you may have already tried them). If you root "in-place", you can still get your kernel replaced with one that is overclockable and that will make you phone more responsive.

PlainJaneT2 is a very good ROM and does include the July OTA update. There's another that eu1 just posted about today (one of the Zach's xtr ROMs (xtrSense 4.0.6.1)) that is really good even without overclocking. Frisco, doogald, mhotovec, eu1, and the other fine folks on here who try out lots of ROMs could probaly suggest a good one for you.
