Think I'm about to root...

I think that rooting may be a better option that smashing my phone with a sledgehammer(the dialer lag has gotten so bad that was actually at the top of the list this week). I have a few questions first. Actually I just want to make sure I have everything in order.

I am going to try the one-click root. I have that file and I am going to put it on my SD card and run it from there right?

Then I am going to do a Nandroid backup. How exactly do I do that?

Then I think I am going to get titanium backup and use that to save all my settings and apps and stuff right?

Then I am going to flash a rom. I am looking at fresh 2.4 or NFXhero 2.2.1? Not sure which one right now. I just want a simple rom that looks like sense and gets rid of lag and allows me to put apps on my sd card. any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

I think that is everything, right? Will doing any of this erase my sd card? How do I remove any sprint apps I dont want?

Any help here would be awesome. I've tried to read up on this as much as I can but these are the questions I still have.

I was in the same position about a week ago, go for it.

Run the 1 click apk from your SD card.

If you power your phone on, while holding the home key, you'll boot into recovery, and back up (nandroid) is an option to select.

I used ROM Manager (from market) to back up, Titanium works too.

Nothing on the SD card will be affected during the process.

Read up on the ROMs and pick what suits you best. I picked the Froyo ROM, since its nearly complete and it looks great on the Hero.

Since you'll be rooted, you can use Titanium to remove all the programs you choose. I think the Cyanogen ROM already takes out the Sprint crap.

Lastly, remember if you flash the CM6 Froyo ROM, you'll also need to flash the google aps (if that is your wish) separately.

Have fun!

linoleum was pretty much spot on. to clear that up nandroid is under the backup/restore menu when you boot into recovery. i run fresh, and am happy with it. i use titanium too, and am happy with that also. just for future reference, it will create a backup file on your sd card, and should you need to reload your apps, you will have to download titanium again from the market, but it will automatically load the file from the card so you can restore your apps and settings. in the end the rom is just a personal preference, kind of like buying a car. you buy what's practical for you and suits your tastes. best of luck, and remember if you get stuck this is a good place to go.

also linoleum didn't mention of it, but i use overclock widget to help speed up mine. there's a hundred different options to overclock it but that's what i went with. if you're interested in overclocking there's also a hundred different threads about it.

Thanks a lot guys. I did it and I think it is all working like it should. I went with Fresh 2.4. Seems to be pretty good so far. Do the HTC widgets not work with this rom? The clock and the music player don't seem to be there anymore. Not that big a deal.

fixin' to try the overclock thing. Wish me luck.

From what I remember when I saw my friend running Fresh 2.4, the HTC widgets should still work as Fresh is running HTC Expresso which is like a watered down HTC Sense. I definitely recall seeing the signature HTC clock/weather widget on his Sprint HTC Hero with Fresh 2.4. ;)

I am glad you had an easy time rooting your handset. I am getting really close to pulling the trigger myself. :)

From what I could tell, Fresh 2.3.3 is exactly like stock 2.1. When I rooted, I couldn't tell much of a difference; of course, I only used my Hero stock for a day before I rooted and that was only because I wasn't near my laptop. I'm running Zen 9.6.2 now and it also has the SenseUI with the clock and all that, except it's much faster.

Hurry-up and root. You'll love it. Like I said, I wasted no time in doing it to mine and I have no regrets; it's a lot of fun to tweak and mess around with. But, I'm a natural tweaker and like to mess around with my electronics as soon as possible.
