Root A little confused

Hey guys. I'm a new to all of this, so please go easy on me. I've read just about every single thread pertaining to my questions, to the point that my eyes are burning out! I just rooted last night, using unrevoked 3.21. Everything went smooth, and I was able to create a nandroid backup when complete, but i just have a couple questions that I hope some of you guys could help with. (I'm pretty sure it worked, because in the HBOOT screen it says "s-off", and I have SU app in my app drawer.
1) After rooting using unrevoked, do I need to flash a ROM before I can use Titanium Backup? I installed the app, and when I try to open it, it says "Sorry, I could not acquire root priveleges. Please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes Busy Box, and try again."(I read that using unrevoked doesn't flash a ROM, but will allow you to do so, is that correct?)
2) Do I need to use a custom ROM and Kernel to use wireless wifi tether. I was unable to get that to work, I tried a couple different versions of it, but not all of them just yet. I'm just unclear, from all that I've read, If i need to go a step further, and flash a ROM, or if I should be able to get it to work without using a custom ROM That was the main reason I rooted, so I'd like to get that working.
3) How often, and when, should I create a nandroid backup? Do I do that after every time I "make changes" to the phone? such as flashing a rom, or a kernel, or a radio update?

I really appreciate any information you guys can shed on me, and again, I've read and searched for days, literally, before doing any of this or asking any questions, so please forgive me if the answers are around here and I just overlooked them. Thanks guys. I LOVE MY EVO!

1. Did you give titanium backup superuser rights? Click on superuser and see if it is under allow or deny.
2. It may be a good idea to flash a rom, if you dont want any changes from the evo stock rom, use : Stock Rooted ROM And you should not have to flash a kernel.
3. Do a nandroid backup before you make any changes and or once you get your phone how you like it. Also, Backup your sdcard to your computer. I have had 2 bad sdcards and not had up to date back ups and had to start from scratch.

Thanks. I was able to get titanium working, I was unaware that I had to download an updated Busy Box. Once I did that, it is working. Now I'm just learning how to use it, and trying to get things backed up. I am going to try installing a custom ROM, such as the one you suggested. If I do that, from what I gather, I would still be able to flash a custom kernel over that ROM if I chose to do so, correct? So hopefully I'll choose a stock ROM to flash, and then be able to get wireless wifi to work. Thnks very much for your prompt and helpful answer.

I have one more silly question. Seeing as I have never used Titanium prior to now, I'm not positive on what I'm supposed to do. I can't find much about it at all while searching. Everything I've read says to backup my apps and my data. When I'm in the backup/recovery section of Titanium, do I just go and individually backup every single thing in that list? Or just the apps I have downloaded and installed? How do I go about backing up my data. I'm sorry for the lame question, but I just want to get everything done correctly the first time, without messing anything up too badly. Thanks

Okay, I figured out how to use Titanium, and everything is all backed up. I was wondering how to confirm that the nandroid backup worked. It said backup complete when finished, but where can I check to confirm that it saved properly. I'm sorry if I have redundant or stupid questions, but I just want to make sure everything is backed up prior to making any further changes. Oh yea, my wireless wifi started working, and I didn't even make any changes frm the way it was last night, when it wouldn't work. I figured I'd try it one more time, and it connected right away, and am currently posting this though my evo's wireless connection. sweet. So another question that I have is this, (i seem to get confused from finding conflicting information) : Once I confirm my nandroid backup is all set, and go ahead and flash a stock rooted 2.2 ROM, do I need to wipe my data, clear cache, and davlick cache prior to flashing that ROM? Do I do it after flashing the ROM? Do I need to do it at all? Are there any other things I should do prior to flashing my fist ROM, or is that pretty much it? Again, I'm sorry if the answers to my questions are hiding somewhere amongst the thousands of posts about this stuff. I have read so much, and some stuff is up to date, some is old news, some have the answers hidden in one sentence of a hundred post thread! So I appreciate any info you guys can get to me. Are you using clockwork or ra like i said? if so, there will be a folder called nandroid on your sdcard, inside that there will be a folder that is your phone's serial number, inside that will be the data. If you used clockwork, there will be a folder, clockworkmod then inside that backup. Also, you can flash a kernel, but make sure it is compatible with that rom. I have been reading more about different ROMS, and am pondering trying Baked Snack or Fresh 3.2 . I'm too indecisive. I guess I'll just need to try em out and see what I like. That seems to be the general consensus. Thanks again for your help.

Thats the best way, ive tried about 6 roms and all kinds of kernels before i found what i like

Well I successfully flashed my first ROM. Thanks a lot to everyone in this forum. Although I haven't posted much at all, I have learned a great deal about the Evo and Android by reading through so much on here. I can't believe I was so nervous to do this, it seems much easier than I was making it out to be. Anyways, I started with a rooted stock ROM from OMJ. [ROM]OMJ's HTC EVO 2.2 Custom ROM v3.2 | FroYo 3.28.651.6 | *Updated 9/19/10* - xda-developers. I haven't flashed a kernel yet, I'm going to try the one that came with the ROM. So far everything seems good. Everything works, wireless tether worked right away, the bloatware is gone. I'm happy. I'm going to try running this one for a while, then possibly try latest netarchy kernel, because I beleive that has the fps unlocked, correct? Anyways, just figured I'd share that I was successful. Oh yea, this ROM has the sprint TV removed, if I were to decide to install that, and I have it backed up on Titanium, would I be able to install it from there, or is it not that simple? thanks.
