A MOD can range anywhere from a simple modification of something within the framework of the phone to something that affects the entire phone, but keeps the basis of the current ROM you're running. "CyanogenMod" is the name of the team of developers, "Cyanogen" is the name of the ROMs they'll be releasing.....
Ex: Changing the battery status, to show percentages, or adding sideloading features to the recent JH7 build.
A "Custom ROM" is basically a customized ROM. It's generally based off of a released build like JH7, but has things that may have been added or taken away.
Ex: I'm working on a ROM based on JH7, but I'll be removing the AT&T and Samsung bloatware, it's been deodexed, sideloading features, adding a few ringtones and notifications and so on. Basically I'm molding a ROM to make it fit what everyone really wants. It's customized!!! lol
A Tool like UTB basically makes a few additions or subtractions to a ROM, without providing an entire ROM. Pete's UTB basically removes bloatware, adds root, and enables sideloading and stuff, but you're not flashing an entire ROM to get it, you're flashing just that tool which does a few things to the current ROM your running.
Clockworkmod is a recovery mode that let's you flash ROMs with ease. It makes everything so convenient to flash. There's no need for Odin or anything. You can go straight into recovery mode and flash overwrite your current ROM with a new ROM. Clockworkmod also allows you to make a back-up of your current ROM in case you flash a ROM you don't like, you can restore your previous set up. Easy, simple, and convenient.
I hope this cleared some things up..... Don't let this stuff intimidate you or anything. It's easy to learn the more you work around it. We all, well most of us (including me) started out not knowing much. Now, I'm doing themes and working on a custom ROM. Go figure lol
