Keep BB Curve 8530 or try another Hero and root?

Sorry everyone,

I posted a similar thread in a different subforum and realized it too late so I deleted the text there and am reposting here.

I was one who had tons of problems with my Hero after the 2.1 upgrade so gave up and traded for a BB Curve 8530. Huge difference in actually, you know, being a phone and connecting to the bluetooth in my truck, but horribly slow at browsing the 'net.

Is it worth it to try another Hero ($140) and root it or should I stay with the reliable BB?

All opinions welcome. Thanks.

I am running 2.1 on my Hero and still hate it. I have not rooted yet - keep going back and forth. I was a Blackberry user for many years - last one was a curve for about two years. If I had it to do over again I would go with the Berry.

Dont get me totally wrong. I love so much about the Hero but it sucks so bad as a phone. Mostly due to the lag, the poor bluetooth connectivity, etc. Blackberry was so good here. I am very curious about the Blackberry Torch. Unfortunately not a Sprint option.

I guess I have only shared my confusion, not given you any real direction...

I had a Samsung Moment which broke a few days ago and I picked up a Hero off of ebay to replace it. So far I love this phone and find no issues with it being a little slow. I really like the hero and it has a lot the samsung moment did not have. SOOO, the samsung moment must really have sucked if people complain about the hero. I am glad I broke my previous phone!! This has been an update for me :)

No issue with BT or lag on my hero

Yeah, I hear you! And I am not willing to pay additional 10 bucks for an evo or epic (I don't live in 4G coverage but understand I still have to pay it), so if I want an android phone on Sprint right now, no other option but the hero. The Moment replacement that came out is a bad phone.

Back to the original question. I'd tell you to get another Hero. Had a BB and will never have another one right now.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I did get another Hero. I'm kind of bummed that there were some scratches, etc. on the body (I guess not everyone keeps their phone(s) mint like mine was) but the screen was flawless and the phone seems to be a good one. So far I've not experienced lag or force closes, which my previous Hero did. Now if the Bluetooth will work successfully (a total deal breaker for me) I'll be happy. As of now, it's working fine without rooting, but at least the option is there for me if I need it or if I just get bored :)

I am wondering what the BT issue is as I read a lot of people stating the BT does not work properly. I have an old ratty H300 motorola BT and it work flawlessly. I did notice that there is a lag with voice dial. But not enough to bother me at this point. Still lovin my phone without root and rom. And plenty fast for what I do with it.

the BT issue was with pairing after the 2.1 update came out. I actually called sprint about that and the guy at advanced tech support thought it was nuts and just doing it wrong. when he called over 5 other guys working there with heros, 3 of them just discovered when i called that they too could not connect to BT. Keep in mind that it is definately a software issue, and not the phone. once I rooted and flashed Cyanogenmod 6, the problem went away

I posted a few days ago. My situation has changed so maybe I can share new insight. First, my wife got a new 8530 this weekend. Great phone BUT I jsut cant get excited about a Blackberry. It is kind of like my Toyota, not exciting, but it just keeps working and doing what it should. In comparison, I finally worked up the courage to root my Hero and load Cyanogenmod 6. It is fantastic! It has fixed everything I complained about before and then some. It is great now.

I tinkered with her 8530 tonight and it just isn't the same. Guess it depends on your personality and what you want. Do you want the handsome woman with the good personality (BB) or do you want the prom queen (Hero)?

The only thing that you can complain about with the Hero is that it just isnt that good out of the box and takes some effort and fear to make it the way it should have been.
