Root Root debate, any help appreciated

Hello, my name is Ron, i have had my brand new HTC EVO for all of 3 days... i love it, however the battery life, and pre-installed applications are upsetting.

I've been reading up on rooting, i know i can do it without an issue, however the dillema is my phone has "froyo" the android 2.2 version. correct me if i'm wrong in terminology.

What are the Cons to rooting?

I know the pro's include tethering, deleting pre-installed applications.... blah blah blah... But i have also read that some users experience camera functionality loss, sprint tv loss, 4g loss.....

I haven't been able to distinguish if the issues arise with rooting a accessory ROM... instead of the default HTC sense... i like the screens, menu's and animations HTC sense has provided... i'm not sure if a NEW Rom, designed by another user would tickle my fancy.


Thanks in advance for any help, and i apologize for any repetition. I imagine it becomes coma inducing on this forum as i am an active member on an automotive forum for chevy colorado/gmc canyon owners and we see "will this tire fit" 25x a day.

I rooted and left mine stock, and didnt see any difference in the functions.... also you can save battery life by turning off 3g when you are in a wifi area, and so... on.. my battery lasts from morning till night on my EVO, and it lasted even before I rooted, I just shut off everything I didnt use.... I prefer mine rooted though, because I could delete things I didnt use, and so on... thats pretty much the only reason why I rooted it... that and I cant leave stuff alone, lol

The cons that I have run into is not being able to do the OTA "Over The Air" Updates without jumping through hoops. You may opt for a "custom" rom, and I have heard of some people going for days without a charge. There is also a minor security risk that you take by "rooting" your phone, as it is the = of getting administrative access to a computer.

doesn't wifi also drain? i turn off wifi, but i dont believe i have ever looked into turning off 3g, i use airplane mode during the day when i'm away from the phone...but i only get 3-4 hours of use out of it on a full charge...seems i play with it often. As for being able to delete things is it a process to do so once rooted, or just the same as normally deleting an app?

Well i believe 2.2 is brand spankin new, so i cant imagine an update anytime soon, regardless would i not be able to unroot after removal of applications? therefore repaving access to OTA?

Sprint has been releasing many updates, 2-3 so far that I recall. Unrooting is easier said than done. I personally prefer to update my stock rom rather than flashing to a rom with root and updates installed. I will post updates to this thread as the OTA's get released and I'm able to upgrade without completely wiping out my phone:

well thats what i mean, the only thing i want to accomplish is the damn stock apps deletion, i don't want to adjust settings and rom

Stick with a stock rom. Just get the latest ota updates then use unrevoked.

Do not delete stock files with out making a backup. All updates will check for those files.. and if its not there the update will cancel.

Just move the files to another folder. The safer way instead of deleting them i used titanium backup to freeze the apps.

ahh so i can use titanium backup to disable them without removing them... i like...
