my 3 branded desire has just got the option of a official update from 2.1 to 2.2, BUT im hearing all sorts of problems, at the mo, it works fine and is great, the only thing that annoys me is the lack of saving to SD, which 2.2 gives. If i have any major problems, have i any comeback with 3/htc at all?, also can you go back to 2.1 if it doesnt work as it should?? HELP! should i? shouldnt I?

i would go for it, but if its just sd card apps you want i may reconsider. out of all the apps on my device only 2 (Twitdroid) and one other insignificant small one had the ability to actually move to sd. all the others including k9mail, for me anyway, have the "move to sd" option in dark, and can't do it.

As someone else said, v2.2 is much better, faster, and debranding is better too as you'll get updates right away. It's the best way to run the phone.

That will improve over time as the apps are updated for Froyo. One of my apps has already been updated to support Froyo recently, so I'm happy and it will only get better.

done it! phew, so far so good, only thing i noticed was that all my album art had cleared off, and strangely some of my music was missing, so ive just re-imported it all... any more probs, i'll keep u updated...
It's a good idea to do a factory reset after updating as it will clear the memory and restart the phone in factory new condition and run the Setup app again. This helps to ensure all old data is wiped off the phone and keep anything from affecting current apps and data. It's a bit of a hassle as you need to reinstall your apps and you lose your text messages, call history, etc. But I think it's worth it.

sigh, people should always warn that on certain devices debranding means there is no way of returning back to the original rom as there are no RUU leaks for these companies

throwing out advice telling people they should debrand without alerting them to the consequences is a bit bad in my opinion.

we cannot assume they know this as they are asking questions about stuff like this in the first place
I dont see any recent RUU for 3 here Shipped ROMs

so if you need to return it you dont have the correct software for warranty purposes

I think you will find H3G is Hutchison 3G aka 3 UK, but you are right, always make sure theres an escape route available when doing anything naughty and in future I will make sure my posts contain a small get out clause... ;)

all these programs do is increase paranoia. they dont actually do any good for android os.
it doesnt matter if they run in the background if they are not in use

You're right, I should have mentioned about reverting to stock may not be available. But to be honest, I'm not concerned about it since I'm running an official version of the HTC firmware so if the phone had to go back to HTC for service, it would appear to have normal firmware on it and the warranty should be honoured. I bought my phone at Telus outright, so the phone is mine, not a Telus unit under contract. If I have a problem, HTC must honour warranty repairs. The firmware I have is legit, so there is no reason for them to deny a legit repair request.

That's my 2 cents.

ATK is not needed as Android operates quite well without it and manages memory properly. I think v2.2 blocks task killers too, and loads up any regular services regardless. But that's fine since services don't cause any battery drain if they're not being used.

with regs to ATK, i unistalled it, to see what performance was like, i didnt notice any difference in battery life or anything like that, but really did notice a slowing down and lagging effect, i re-installed it, and hey presto, 20 apps open, i cleared them all off, and i was off back up to full speed immediately.....
