Preloaded Maps for Android.

CoPilot uses pre-loaded maps. It's pretty expensive though. There are other options, but I haven't tested any of them. I guess it depends what you want to do with the maps, driving, hiking, etc. I just just use Google maps for driving, but I haven't gone places without signal yet. For hiking and geocaching using topo maps I use Backcountry Navigator.

I'll be darned if I can find the link to a list of popular map apps and their pros/cons, but if you do a search for "map" on Apprain.com you'll find some. I can't say I've used any of them, but here are a few:

Maps (-) - Android app on AppBrain

Locus - Android app on AppBrain

Topo Maps - Android app on AppBrain

NavDroyd

Oh yeah...one more I know virtually nothing about but have heard of... Brut Google Maps.

[APPMOD][09.08.10] Brut Google Maps 4.4.0.4414-brut16 - xda-developers

found that link: http://mobile.jack-frost.co.uk/android_sat_nav_apps.php

CoPilot is now offering US preloaded maps through the AppStore for $4.95. I took them up on it, and was able to also download Canada and Mexico (?) These make up the NA package offered at $19.95.

I have used it a number of times. It is loaded with features and settings - so for only 5 bucks - well worth it. I am sure this is a market penetration push by them, and I would not think it will last. They also offer other online services (like traffic), so they are hoping up-selling will make this profitable.

Downloading took a bit of fiddling around, but was not too much of a problem. At this price - would not even consider a torrent download even if it was available.

I am taking a test look right now. Those maps look years and years old. there is construction in my area complete over five years ago not on their maps.

Copilot is buying very very old maps to offer the low price, and from what I understand they re going to charge an arm and a leg for good maps in a few months, like they did with the European versions

I don't use torrents but my guess is that even at $5 people are not going to pay for it with such bad maps.

I tried to find out details of what will happen in Dec 2010 or Jan 2011 when CoPilot starts to charge. CoPilot won't comment. I told CoPilot on there blog that I would be willing to pay if they improved there maps. Yes they are dated. I understand that in Europe they use Navteq maps. I will be willing to pay for Navteq maps.
I was very disappointed after waiting months for Navigon to see that they only have maps for the United States in there Android US release. I have asked them if they were going to offer a North American version with both the United States and Canada and they said possibly. So I am waiting once again. CoPilot or Navigon.
Navigon offers North America for the iphone, why not for Android.
Navigon uses Navteq maps which are excellent. Time will tell.
