If you are going to suggest that I wait for Notion Ink Adam, may I ask why? From the specs, it looks like G Tablet and Adam are very similar.

Also, any other suggestions (archos 101?) are more than welcome

I have an Archos 101 8GB on order. I REALLY like the specs of the Adam, and may get one next year, but want something to get me through until then. I may not even move up to an Adam until middle/late next year. I do hope it can run a flavor of Ubuntu as well as whatever version of Android is current.

It's just a question of how long you're willing to wait. "Q1 2011" could be as late as March or almost April.

I was originally waiting for the Adam, but eventually gave up and started looking for something else. That's when i came across the Archos 101. Looked up their website and found they had a distributor in the Philippines so i e-mailed them about it.

After a week they emailed me back saying they're getting a shipment early november and asked if i'd like to pre-order. Considering how long it takes for anything to get imported here i took them up on it. So now i'm waiting for mine to arrive.

I already have an iPod for extreme mobility, so a 7" tablet isn't much of an upgrade, 10" is about netbook sized so i know it isn't gonna feel as cramped.

Not too bad for a $299 device.

It depends on what you call similar I guess. To me - they are barely similar at all.

Screen size? Galaxy (7in); Adam (10in) - For me, a 7 inch screen is barely worth it. I want the larger screen to really enjoy what I am doing. But to each their own.

Screen type - G (lcd only); Adam (lcd & eReader style for reading in full day light). This dual screen capability is key for me as I do a fair amount of reading. Having one device that serves two purposes in this way is a great feature.

Camera - G(two cameras front/back); Adam( 1 camera that swivels front to back). This is not a big deal but it does feel more flexible to use.

Ports - G(30 pin dock to interface to other types); Adam (3 usb ports, hdmi port; sd card)

GPS - G(no?); Adam (yes)

Cost - G($700); Adam ($500 fully loaded)

There are other subtle differences too and I really like the OS on the Adam in how it plans to handle apps. Its just no contest to me. The Adam has everything I wanted/dreamed about in a tab.

Eh, thanks for the extensive post, but under "G tablet" I didn't mean the Galaxy Tab... I meant ViewSonic G Tablet.

How does Adam handle apps? What's so awesome about it that it has everything you ever dreamed of in a tablet?

• Supposedly thinner and lighter with many "firsts" (hopefully...)

To me that's worth the wait and worth not investing more than a couple hundred dollars for something quality. Besides, none of these 1st gen tabs are really wowing me for the price except for the Archos and Nook. I think the rooting community will have a field day with the Nook Color.

Well, those aren't a whole lot cheaper than the other tablets mentioned (excluding Galaxy Tab). Also, I decided I want a 10" tablet.

Since when is $120-150 (more than a 1/3 less) not a whole lot cheaper? $150 cheaper than the basic Adam which still has a lackluster screen res regardless of what quality screen is on it. I'm tired of netbook screen specs. I don't want downscaled video if I'm paying over $400 for a device. And if I'm going to have netbook res, it's going to be in a smaller screen giving me better pixel density (ie. nook color). If I'm going 10" I want it to replace my 12" laptop, maybe not in power but in productivity. And scrolling all the time just isn't productive. If I'm losing one handedness, I want a good reason why. And the size difference between 7" and 10" is significant.

Also a reason why the 8.9" LG might hit a sweet spot.

But it doesn't seem like the general public cares about productivity and these are mostly toys to people so most are probably fine with a 600 res screen. If that fits your bill, then go for it. I think the G-tab is pretty good spec wise and price wise. I'm just not dropping $400+ on something that has toy like specs when my phone does a majority of what the tablet can do without any extra cash outlay.

To be honest and at the risk of bloating, money is not the issue for me. (still, I obviously don't want to pay $1000 for a tablet or something).

Will notion ink adam have SIM card support?

I don't have your answer on the Adam having a SIM card but in this comparison between the Adam and the iPad -it shows that at least the 3G network on the Adam is GSM:

3G model also includes: Quad-band GSM 850 900 1800 1900 MHz GPRS/EDGE, Tri-band UMTS 850 1900 2100 MHz HSDPA.

*IF* it was going to have a SIM card it would need the GSM and not the CDMA. But this is a tab, not a phone, I am guessing that it does not have a sim card but to be honest I don't know much about sim cards in the first place.

And if you're not worried about money, I think the Adam and LG Optimus are the two to wait on. The Optimus is an 8.9" that is supposed to be pretty sweet from their pulled info sheet. There's also a nice chinese one with a 768 screen I saw last night that should be around or under the $400 mark. Can post a link to it if I find it from my own. Saw it when I was on the computer last night.

You are correct. I went back and looked at the spec page for the Adam and it clearly shows a sim card slot. Click on "specifications" at the top of this page:

Granted these specs are slightly out of date (its actually better than this) but I am confident the sim card slot did not go away.

Their hardware does not hold up well over time. My advice is to avoid their hardware like the plague. They are definitely a quantity over quality company.

If you can wait just hold on until summer of next year, there will be soooo many tabs out by then it will be crazy.

if money is not a "big" concern and can't wait, then the galaxy tab from one of the two GSM carriers is the way to go, right, with your SIM need? you get a sanctioned android tablet, 3G and wifi, along with the works out-of-box. (rooting can come later.)

Just posted in another thread b4 I saw this one. Played around with a ipad for a week, really like the idea of having a tablet, but being with android on my phone and all my apps, would make more sense for android pad.

Heard that froyo is not set up for tablets? Is this true? Also, have heard that while 7" might be good for reading books, not really good as a computer for browising, so I am convinced 9-10" is way to go.

Is archos the only one immenent, and what is their drop date? before xmas?

Archos is already out. Dunno what the problem is on the american side. But we're had our Archos units for a week now. They had started shipping on Nov1 as promised and it was just a matter of time before it finally reached us.

Of course, according to the supplier, his next few shipments have already been reserved, so the ones ordering now probably won't get theirs until december.


When you look at the numbers, you can tell that current androids aren't really suitable for tablets (Development specs only cover phone sizes, there's no regulation for slate form factors). However, even then, it's still considerably more advanced than the iOS. It may not be meant to be for tablets, but it's still good enough for it. And as a transitional OS, it means that by the time Android 3.0 rolls around, there would be HD apps ready for it.

Also, just curious, how do you use a 3g wifi overseas? Can you jailbreak an ipad so you can use anyone's sim?

iPad is factory unlocked. All you do is swap micro sim with a 3G data plan. I don't know if t mobile's 3G frequency is compatible with other countries.

Thanks. Then the question is , and sorry if this has been asked and answered, is is how will tablets sold by vzw get data? Will they have cdma radios? If so, will they require a separate data plan from my phone or can i use them all on 1 plan.

If not cdma, then tablet will not be getting data via vzw data network?

And sorry to hi jack the thread a bit, i know its about the adam vs. tab, which my answer is that i think i really need a 9-10" screen. So throw the archos into this too.
