Root Cognition install help request - No update.zip created by ROM manager

Hi everyone. I'm trying to do my first ROM install and am following these instructions which no one seems to be complaining about:

FAQ - Cognition Wiki

Seemed pretty straightforward, but isn't working because I have no update.zip. When I did the "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" step no update.zip file was created in the internal SD root. Buried in the clockwork mod folder is recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip, do I move this and rename it?

You should be installing from your external SD card.

Here's what I did (and I've installed and run various ROMs from different incantations of Cognition to other cooked ROMs without any trouble):

Installed the ROM to my PC from whichever developer. Then, I tethered my phone to the PC and did a traditional drag-and-drop of the still-zipped ROM file on to my external SD card.

At this point, when you open ROM Manager, you will click on Install ROM from SD card and then scroll down the list to "sdcard" where you will select the zip file you dropped on there, or you can just go into CWM using the 3-button reboot/recovery method; either should work. If you use the 3-button method, make sure to select "choose from zip files on SD card", not the first option which I believe is "install .zip from SD card". This will then open up a larger menu in CWM which will list the zip files you have on your external SD card (if you have more than one file to choose from; otherwise, it will only show the ROM you're looking for anyway).

At that point, you just click the file that you want, and away you go.

You do not want to copy out any folder and rename it. When you click "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery", the phone should try and connect to servers to download the "update.zip" file which is CWM Recovery. Don't follow ryandelman's steps until you are able to download the "update.zip" file.

If you have problems with this, let me know and I'll send you mine.

I'm sorry if this question is in the wrong place. I have been unable to locate instructions on how to post a new thread...
I have been trying for several days to install Cognition 2.3B8. I rooted my Captivate using z4Root. Deleted some AT&T bloat ware. Installed Rom Manager and Titanium Backup. Cognition2.3B8.zip file is on my external SD card. When I run RomManager and choose install from SD card and navigate to that file, the phone just boots into the Samsung Recovery Utility rather than Clockworkmod recovery. Attempted this at least a half-dozen times. Have uninstalled and re-installed Rom Manager to no avail. When I flash Clockworkmod, it does create the update.zip file, so I know that much is working. Rom Manager does have superuser permissions.
If I choose to use Rom Manager to backup the OS, it similarly boots into the Samsung recovery. I'm thinking there is something that will be painfully obvious to someone that I am missing?

All you have to do in the Samsung recovery is navigate to 'reinstall packages', and that will apply the update.zip. For me, it usually says some stuff about installing CWM, and then reboots back into the Samsung recovery again. If you again navigate to 'reinstall packages', it should then take you to CWM.

Thanks, but...got into clockworkmod, navigated to sd/, and it couldnt find the zip file... but I can see it, it's there! Indicates a recovery.log file was created...

Hmm, I've never hit that one before. You might try going to the ROM Manager app and clicking 'Install ROM from SD card'

Also, did you put the ROM on your 'external' sd card (ie, the one you can take out)? You should be putting on your internal sd (or 'base drive') and installing it from there.

Well, so far so bad...I'll give it a few days, but;
1) I find no way to remove unused home screens. Edit function is gone? I dont need seven screens
2) Battery seems to discharge faster
3) One keyboard option vs. 3 in my original OS!
4) Find no way to edit dock widgets
May be heading back to rooted Eclair unless I'm missing something...

Everything I have read and been told, is that it should be on the Internal SD card not the external...but I am at the point I will try anything...I flash rom manager...go to install from SD card pick the file mine is v4.1.1 seems to load with yellow letters but then blue screen on top...not green...must have green to install...when I click reinstall pkg I get error...and have no choice but reboot...try again...nothing...load the update.zip...then try again...same thing over and over been trying to install cognition for 3 days now,,,,Help....LOL
