Help merge contacts

I have just synced my outlook contacts with my new Samsung Galaxy S i9000. Now I can see multiple entries for my contacts. For e.g. I have 1 entry for John Office from outlook and another for John Shaw from facebook/google. Both Johns are the same so I should have only 1 entry.

I tried to fix this double entry by renaming John Office to John Shaw in my phone contacts. However now I just have 2 entries with the same name John Shaw.

How do I get just 1 entry for John Shaw. Thanks in advance.

In Gmail go to your contacts. Click "More Actions". Click "Find and Merge duplicates".

I think that should do it.

Select the contact on your phone that you want to use then:
Menu
Edit
Menu
Join

That will bring up a list of contacts, choose the one you want to merge.
