Official OTA Update Discussion

Actually, one merged thread is a hell of a lot easier to track than 1,000 threads on the same exact topic with the same exact questions seeking the same exact answers.

Actually no. Having multiple threads with separate names gives some semblance of organization and at least gives you an idea of what's in them - and thus where to find an answer. How are multiple, unique, and separate subtopics RESTING within an overarching category, but nevertheless unique in their own right, mashed together into a single long thread in run-on-sentence-manner (much like this sentence) easier than just having separate subtopic threads? Each of the threads that now represent this thread were unique enough to deserve their own thread, imo, but because some mod that passed by saw update or froyo or whatever in the topic heading that suddenly makes it not unique enough right? That's like saying everything that has to do with the Captivate should go into one thread. And obviously reading through 10 pages of disjointed shit is easier than skimming through a series of topic headers. What we have now is like a hard-drive that needs defragging.

Easy killer. Your scatter-brained thought process on the matter is why you think that the multi-thread method would work. A discussion on the OTA update with all the same questions seeking the same answers all belong together. This allows less clutter in the forum for those of us wanting to discuss other topics. It also allows those properly using the search feature to find such answers without getting a million results in various threads with a bunch of off-topic discussion mixed in.

Think needle in a haystack.

I don't know about you, but having to search through multiple pages of the same "OTA update won't work" and "How to OTA update" threads makes it difficult to find the unique discussions. It's the same reason sub-forum categories and single "Home Screen" threads exist.

This thread is solely for the discussion about the OTA update, it's changelog and it's use. Hell, throw a little troubleshooting in there.

Do you want a million more threads on Froyo (on top of what already exists) when it launches?

Next time I'll try to speak in simpler prose for you. I fail to see any real challenge to my argument. Before this "killer" gets fired up I'll spare you. lol

New to the android stuff but have rooted successfully, used Titanium to remove bloatware, and so far really enjoy this phone. However, I have a question. I did a software update check, showed 100, downloaded, got 58% finished and bombed out.

Went to software updates and hit resume and got a "no firmware" tag????? Does that mean anything? Did I remove something I shouldn't have? Or does the software update really mean anything? Do all updates come wireless or can they be downloaded to computer?

Just hoping when 2.2 comes out I'll be able to update!!

Thanks, and I'm enjoying reading what you folks have done to your phones.

there are already many threads about this. Please go download Kies mini from Samsung and you can get your update though the wire.

which firmware does your phone say it is running? If it is xxxxxxJH7, then you are already running the latest (official) firmware.

Careful though. It's been reported many times that even though your phone successfully downloads the update and then fails on install, your phone may show JH7 (although not actually being updated).

Check your Phone, CSC and PDA versions. When this happens your Phone version may show JH7, but the PDA/CSC will still show JF6.

Build number should also read ECLAIR.UCJH7 if successfully upgraded.

I know this has probably been asked many times, but I want to have this question on this thread because almost all the people who visit this thread are visiting for the answer to this question: Does anyone know when the OTA update Froyo 2.2 is coming out for the Captivate? I'm specifically referring to AT&T's OTA update. Thanks.

No one knows. A date has not been officially released. Rumors and expectations tho...that's a different story.

Hope this has not been covered,I finally got the update after 2 1/2 weeks of trying to get the OTA or Mini Kies to work & each time it kept failing thank's to the help of a Att rep at a device support store my phone is now updated,My ? is beside the GPS issue what else does the update do for the phone. Thanks for the info all
I'm a newb and am waiting on the official OTA update. I have read that 2.2 allows syncing of multiple Google calendars. That is my only real reason for wanting the update. My employer has switched to Google Apps for official email. So, right now I'm having to choose one or the other to sync. I had them both setup (through sharing the Google calendars) a couple of weeks ago to sync on my Captivate, but somehow that stopped working and was only syncing one calendar. I can't make it work again.

After searching a bit I am still left with many questions
How can I OTA update after installing unleash the geese... err uhhh uhmmm, the beast?

What happens when updating:
update downloads, phone resets with the "updating" white screen
Phone reboots one last time and says "update failed, no changes were made."

I did factory data reset, no worky.
I tried using the kies usb settings, no worky.
I am using twlauncher since i did a factory data reset. still no worky

I read on another forum that you can do a pure restore to stock, but I'm not sure how.
Will this delete my mp3s, contacts, etc etc?
I would like to update without losing all my shtuff.
Any pro suggestions from people who have worked around this shizit?

Thank you for your patience and input in advance.

You might not be able to. Many people, after hacking their phones, find that OTA updates stop working.

I read on another forum that you can do a pure restore to stock, but I'm not sure how.
It's not a pure restore to "stock" and lack of OTA updates is one of the common complaints.

Hacking is a one-way street.

The Odin "1-click" restore/flash does not touch the stuff on sdcard/. However, it's wise to do a backup to something other than your phone (MicroSD, PC, etc) to be safe if there's data you care about.

"shizit"? "shtuff"? *groan*

Pro tip: make backups of any data you care about.

I reflashed to jh6 with odin and went to flash the update. I first rooted and did the lag fix then I connected to ATT server to d/l the update. Downloaded fine, but would not install. Connected to kies and it d/l'd and installed the update, but soft bricked the phone. DDid odin again, but before root and lag fix, I connected to kies and installed jh7 with no issues. Long story short, root and lag fix will corrupt the update.

The last thing you want to be doing is applying an official system update to a phone with nonstandard/unexpected filesystems (which is what the "lagfix" hacks do). That's what bricks your phone, and would be the expected result.

I believe most custom ROMs intentionally block OTA updates for this very reason. By brute-forcing the update onto your phone, you were intentionally bypassing this safety check.

So I'm new to Android platform. I've caught on pretty quick about everything, but the tech stuff behind it I"m still learning. This being said, my device the other day told me that an update is available for download. So I downloaded it OTA from the device.

It rebooted my phone and whatnot. I thought it was 2.2, but it ended up being something called 2.1-update. That's fine, but since then every hour my phone alerts me with a message saying "A New Software is installed and ready to use." Well why does it continue to say that? Am I not using it? Did I miss a step in the install process?

And next question, what is it exactly that was updated?
