I was able to root (temp) my Metro Ascend with the z4root and I also downloaded the root explorer app from the market:). I did this only to remove the unwaned apps that came with the phone. I don't want to mess up my phone or anything so does anyone have a list of what I should not delete:eek:. I'm am new to all this, but I notice that the .apk are followed by .odex; what are these?

I used titanium backup to uninstall the bloatware. It lists all apps installed, and you just select one, and there is an un-install option. Dunno what carrier yer using, but I have MetroPCS and I uninstalled pretty much everything the put on there except the metro navigator and the app store in case I want to re-install any of those. So far everything is OK.

Hi Burner! I'm so sorry I missed doing that in this post. I certainly did mean to give you attribution. I did earlier today in another post. I have never quoted a post from one thread to another and didn't know you could do it.

I'll fix it right now. Thanks so much for catching this and calling it to my attention.

I have been lurking for a few days now and this forum has a ton of great info.

I have a Metro Ascend which I rooted (Perm) with z4root. z4root would not download to the my phone so I just downloaded it to my laptop and transferred it to my SD card via the data cable and ran it that way. No need to DL the other browser mentioned in other posts doing it this way.

I DL'd Titanium Backup from the App store and ran it. I then backed up everything I wanted to delete before hand. Then I went back and deleted what I just backed up.

I DL'd Overclock Widget from the App store and used it to speed the CPU to the full 600Mhz.

It seems there is a bunch of conflicting posts regarding what is safe to delete. Seems some people delete things others don't or say not too and have no problems. Like I deleted Metro App Store with no problems so far. I used the above list as a guide but again others delete more and some less. If you do a backup before a delete, will you always be able to reverse it?

I would also suggest that some of the more important posts get stickied to the top of the forum if possible. They proved very helpful to me and I wish to thank everyone who contributed to those posts.

Yes it does! I'm glad you came out of hiding! :p

Another way to do that would be to download Dolphin Mini Browser. It allows you to download apps that the stock browser doesn't. That's how I downloaded z4root.

Good for you. Some people get over excited and forget to back up before they uninstall. Once we get an Overclock Recovery it won't be such a problem but for now it is causing a lot of phone users much grief.

I used SetCPU but I think it's half of one a dozen of the other. :)

Your reference to what is safe to delete is very important. Since more and more users are wanting to root so that they can remove stock applications it's important for us to compile an accurate list of what can be safely removed and what is very important NOT to remove from each carrier, Cricket and MetroPCS, as each are programmed differently and so the lists would be different.

I have Cricket so I know what that list is for my phone.

Above I have posted a list that BURNER had posted on another thread but would appreciate any comments or confirmation before I create a new and updated thread devoted to this topic.

Your reply will be very much appreciated. :)

Thanks for responding.

As of 12PM today, the items I have deleted so far for my Metro Ascend are:

Mobile Banking (Metro)
UNO
Gameloft Free Games
App Store (Metro)
Moco Space
Loopt
My Extras
Virtual Card
Mobile IM

I have rebooted the phone and have had no problems as of yet. It is of course only 4 hours. :D

I'm toying with deleting 1 or more of the mail programs but will not until I can determine what is safe. 3 mail programs is kinda crazy?

I agree with you that the info should be divided by carrier. Again, it seems like the rooting thread for each carrier, the safe to delete thread for each carrier and the ROM thread for Cricket (so far) should be stickied to the top of the Ascend forum for ease and less confusion.

Do you know if this forum supports sticky's?

Hi Robb! What is Moco space? I've seen some folks posting that they deleted it and their phones stopped functioning properly afterwards. Hope you don't have a similar problem.

Cricket Ascend only has two email programs and I'm definitely not deleting gmail and the other one doesn't take up that much space so I see no reason to do anything with it. I am a big believe in "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". :)

As for if this forum allows stickies I'm not sure. But I know that the Mods are watching this forum now that it has become more active so I expect that one of them might show up to answer your problem. Thanks so much for your valuable input. I'll be watching to see if you report any probs with it in the future.

Cheers!

MocoSpace is some kinda chat/IM program. I think it was a Metro app tho.

Thanks! I just wondered what it was. I hope it isn't tied into Google somehow. That seems to be the key - not removing anything google related.

I figure I'll just delete in stages. Maybe take a few days off and see if anything is screwed up. Then hit a few more. I went ahead and backed up the entire phone before messing with anything. You never know. I will report any problems here if I encounter them.

I can't find it but I think I read it in a very long thread in the Android Forum pertaining to LauncherPro. When the Developer put an expiration in the freeware it created a problem for many users and the only way they could get their phones to work again was through canvas.

So I guess it isn't a good idea to uninstall it unless you have another launcher you can rely on in any unforeseen event.

Just a follow up:
Still going strong with no problems after a day and a few hours. Like I said above I removed the Metro App Store, thats the 1 that had me worried. Maybe it will affect me on the 2.2 update. Will see.

Robb

Please do keep me updated so I can edit the Step by Step Rooting thread in the post of what you can and can't delete on the Metro Ascend.

Thanks so much for the update today!
