Speed, customization, and having full control over your phone. Plus with the netarchy kernel or any other kernel that has support for Voodoo sound. The sound quality is by far the best I have heard. I have no use for my ipod anymore.

In layman's terms? New to Android so need a few pointers. Is there a step by step guide etc and recommended Tom? And what's voodoo? All sounds interesting and something I want to get amongst but not sure how! Any battery life improvements? And speed.......its quick anyway. How much quicker? And I'm desperate for the FM radio as per nexus 1!!!!!!

Well basically there is a lot more you can do with your phone. There is a step by step guide on XDA developers forum to rooting and it's pretty much self explanatory. I'll link to it and edit my post. Also it's quicker as in I never experience the slightest amount of lag, especially with games like dungeon defenders.

Also Voodoo sound control is basically a way to change sound quality and it has a lag fix to improve sound quality that is present in phones like the nexus s and Galaxy S phones. And battery life for me is much better i noticed a drastic improvement over stock with cm7 rc1.

For someone new to Android the biggest reason to root and the easiest reason is root only apps.

AdFree will remove ads from all your apps, you can do screen shots with Drocap2, easier to back up all of your apps and data with apps like MyBackup Pro and Titanium Backup, and you can remove ANY apps you want to remove.

There are a lot of other benefits when you want new ROMs, overclock your phone, increase sound quality etc
