Well Kept Secret

I don't think many have noticed this, but the EVO3D has been a ridiculously well kept secret. We had no leaks of info whatsoever before the Launch outside of that little hTC Shooter tidbit. No photo leaks/concept designs or anything. Recently also they've kept this phone on lockdown with how much information about it enters the public. The Sensation is all over youtube in the hands of many getting reviews, while the only EVO3D videos are from CTIA. We're still not even sure if the HTC Shooter is the real codename for this phone. I couldn't see why it isn't named the Supersonic 2 or Supersonic 3D.

I'm guessing after google i/o we might see more of the evo 3D. The original evo was the same way.

2010 produced a bumper crop of impressive superphones - a big leap over the predecessors - and a big leap forward to Froyo (yeah, yeah, GB by December, uh huh - so Froyo).

And that broke open all sorts of opportunities for users not seen before.

Out in public, anonymous-coward fanboys are going ape over which dual-core is the coolest - I'm not kidding - coolest. Because they missed the wave, I guess.

Over here in realityVille, we're not getting a leap - we getting a huge refinement to Evo, with the only leap being maybe the 3D.

Proof is in the pudding.

I've modded far and wide and have dealt with the iPhans coming to whine how much smoother their interface is compared to some crappy tube of some Androids. I've never let it pass, because with a custom kernel, I couldn't figure out what they were talking about - I don't have a smooth problem - and my iP4-toting buds are jealous of my phone's response. Period.

But I recently looked at a DX because a DX user (that I argued SoCs with last year) was complaining about it - and now I see the complaint.

So - the dual-cores and bigger memory are going to provide that missing smoothness for the majority with decent implementations - and break open new features (Sense 3, 3D, yadda yadda yadda).

I guess what I'm saying is, people got complacent, even in the press, and haven't noticed it yet - it seems they're still looking for last year's leaps and are missing this year's huge improvements in refinements - and none are asking the right questions.

WTF is up with the Nova display on the LG and when will we see changes to display technology (transreflective, hybrid)? And when will users who care even get a decent explanation about SAMOLED+ vs. previous - without the hoopla? When are we getting contrast and gamma adjustments on these so-called media marvels?

Is it the 2000s yet? Can I please see a phone review or discussion that doesn't laud the megapixels?

Can I please see one publication stop calling SoCs "chipsets?"

Can I please stop seeing uncoordinated and uncorrelated benchmarks?

The media doesn't seem to know the questions to ask, and the makers live in their own worlds - so they need to be asked where they can't wiggle out.

But mostly - I think HTC knows if this phone is really a winner or a dog.

I think they know it's a winner, performance wise, and that within no time flat, that will drive sales when it hits the streets.

Why aren't they pushing out info? Why should they? Who's pressuring them to?

Well I have a few concerns (really only 2) assuming there are no major steps backwards (i.e., evo was a decent phone; gps; antennae. ...) and they fix/address battery life:
a) Will the display be visible in daylight (outside) to the extent that one can easily read the screen (gps usage and such) (i don't mind if it is faded as long as it is easy to read)
b) Will the galaxy sii fix all of their issues (mostly gps; distortion; relatively weak antennae; because they do provide good visibility outside as well as better battery life (again assuming no steps backwards)

Sprint still has other devices to promote that are currently available.

While it is important to offer announcements and sneak peaks of what is coming just to remain relevant, if you have too many people on the Evo 3D hook, how many other phones will be forgotten and collecting dust till it drops?

Since the Evo3D is probably another 6-8 weeks away, I would expect things to be quiet till we get closer to gameday.

The next big push will be Nexus S which is supposed to drop in the first half of May.

I hope it is not 8 weeks. The nexus S is last year phone and am very surprise they are adding it. The timing just seems wrong with the galaxy 2 this close (they are not the only us provider adding an updated galaxy s while the rest of the world is getting the galaxy 2; go figure).

Right now they are running about 3-4 months behind 'state of the art' relative to t-mobile, at&t and verizon which is a bit odd given that the evo was actually (nearly) first to market last cycle.

I think the fact that little has surfaced is two fold. For one Sprint probably wasn't too happy with all the leaks that sprang from the Evo...of course that being said it hyped the phone like crazy. They had to do little marketing since all the leaks pretty much went viral. So they have probably fixed the major leaks from inside and made it more a controlled drip.

The other problem is what has been mentioned. Outside of the 3d technology there really isn't much to leak...I mean last year it was 4G which was HUGE. 3d...meh not so much in the eyes of a lot of tech geeks who are already kind of skeptical of having 3d on a phone.

last reply on this thread. I sort of disagree with regards to not much to leak. The evo 3d is basically a sensation with 3d (probably software). The sensation is slated to be out on t-mobile in early june and in itself is generating much excitement in Europe.

How will you be waiting indefinitely? They told us it will launch this summer. At absolute worst, that is something like 3.5 months.

Also, I am curious as to what exactly they have to show us (you) for this to be deemed a true upgrade that competes with all current and many future pones?

"leaked info" is actually a weapon in a company's advertising campaign.

they do leak info on purpose... just enough to keep the public thinking about it... for others (in public) to take the small info and create big rumors. that create more talk.

not saying BS is.. real or not.
but saying that it does happen with company approval and design.

Agree that in modern marketing, a "leak" could well be intentional. But for all intents and purposes, that's still a planned announcement by the company. The date and amount of info to be leaked is well-orchestrated.

I particularly enjoyed the marketing campaign for movies like Tron Legacy and TV show Heroes where all these fictitious web sites were created to make it look like elements of the plot were verifiable in the real world. Tons of easter eggs to be found. Made it feel like you could get more insider info if you were a better hacker. And indeed some easter eggs required some pretty heavy duty technical knowhow to find.

However, HTC seems to be a very traditional straight-shooter. I've yet to see any form of creative marketing for this particular phone or any of its past phones.

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm a big fan of creative marketing. Have you guys heard about the viral video of 4 guys on a bus with iphones, all hooked up to a receiver connected to amped speakers, and they proceed to play a song that they wrote?

Was this really just an indy video or was Apple somehow behind it? We'll never know because it was never officially released as a commercial. Apple never took credit for it (but didn't deny either). It was just on youtube making the rounds.

Whether or not Apple was involved is irrelevant. Clearly the video created buzz. There's no reason why this kinda thing couldn't happen for the Evo 3D. Start throwing up anonymously created 3D content online. Make it interesting. let it be known that it was made with an Evo 3D. But wait, the Evo 3D isn't even out yet.... how could that be???

Gotta generate buzz.

Anaglyph glasses for now, as that seems to be the only format available on youtube. Hey it was just an example If I actually had any marketing skills, I'd be doing real marketing work!

And that's interesting - I guess the anaglyph glasses with the that G Tablet means that you can use colored glasses to resolve polarized 3D???

harsh? i sure didn't take it that way. all's good. I know you too well at this point.

personally I hate anaglyph 3D mainly because of "subpar color reproduction." Understatement of the half-century, huh? And it doesn't work with my brain. I've never been able to see in 3D with anaglyph technology, so not sure what's going on there.

If the polarized 3D video is tinted red-cyan, then yes, you can use the anaglyph glasses. But.... I would think that if you tinted the polarized frames, then when you put on regular polarized glasses, you wouldn't be able to merge the frames because of the color discrepancy. Don't know. Never tried. I might try to find a stereo image later photoshop the tints into it, and the cross my eyes and see what happens.

Either way, I hate how color is completely bastardized with anaglyph solutions, even though it's the easiest way to confer depth with stereo images....

Ok, here's my photoshopped red/cyan stereo image. This one works by focusing behind the image to bring the flowers together. Assuming you can do it, you should see the depth, but for me, the flower is rapidly flashing red and blue simultaneously. hard to describe. But overall, the ORIGINAL colors are showing through, i think because the red and cyan overlap in my brain is canceling each other out.

-edit- after holding the image in stereo for more than 30 sec, i stopped noticing the flashing and the resulting image was pretty decent. Though it is darker than the original.

Much easier on the eyes. So if you can get the anaglyph version working, then you can probably watch an anaglyph polarized 3D video with regular neutral density polarized lenses. But it sucks.


BTW if you try to view these images with cross-eyes (focusing in front of the image), the resulting pic will still be in 3D, but the depth will be reversed. Kinda like a mirror image of a 3D object.
