***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

I'll have to take a few hours of comp time to go get my Nexus on whatever morning it releases...this is why Verizon sucks over this whole secretive launch date crap. I need to notify my boss I will be taking that time off in advance.

Same here. Comp time for me as well. I have a freebie personal day I haven't used yet as well. Might just take the whole day. As a courtesy it would be nice to give my director a heads up though. C'mon Verizon...we're trying to do the right thing here! :).

Do you think it worked?

Not being able to remove the Google search box is highly annoying. I never use it and it's pointless for me. I guess I've just got my first reason to root.

I've also decided on a name for my GNex: "Jupiter's". If you don't get it, don't worry you probably don't want to. If you do get it then I hope the Nexus brings honor to this ludus, dominus.

Do we know what a "soft launch" actually means?

After thinking about it, I'm thinking it means simply that the launch date hasn't been set yet. Like "tentative launch".

As has been said, I can't imagine they will just magically appear on the shelves one day. It's going to be priced as a high-end phone, and they will market it as such. Also, there's no way they want exclusivity to just ignore it and keep it out of competitors' hands just for spite or something.

Doesn't make sense, unless there's some blood feud wife-stealing subplot between the CEOs of Verizon and Google.

In marketing-speak, a soft launch means a product is launched with little or no promotional/marketing support. Soft launches are then followed up with the hard launch, which is basically when they start actually actively promoting the product.

A soft launch is usually done for one of two reasons:
  1. They want the product out but don't want to take the focus off some other venture or release.
  2. In technology areas, it's often used as a "beta" release to make sure all the bugs are worked out before actively promoting the product.

I think it's possible they may delay the hard launch so that they can get as big of a bang as possible from the RAZR and Rezound. With three high-end devices coming out all at the same time, it would make sense to spread out the campaigns a bit.

It is irritating to know it will be there. Maybe Windsock didn't have the absolute latest and greatest though? I can hope for that.

Should we all get on twitter and pull a Sheldon?? "*knock knock knock* Nexus *knock knock knock* Nexus *knock knock knock* Nexus"

LOVE IT!

If you want to tweet to Verizon, go for it and let us know what happens. I doubt tweeting at them is going to get them to release the phone early or drop a release date for us, but that's my opinion.

Also in regards to the contests ending on release dates, it would still mean the last day of the contest is after the phone is released and I honestly think its just a coincidence. Did the Nexus S or Nexus One release internationally before in the US?

P3 finished his Gnex review. I enjoyed reading it, it's actually pretty fair and thorough.
He really likes it :D

Galaxy Nexus Review

I'm a little bummed about the speaker volume. TBolt has the same issue. It's hard to hear calls on the speaker while driving. Hopefully that'll be fixed in one of those timely Google updates!

I believe the search bar is on every home screen. And only because there's no dedicated search button anymore (and that's how it is in honeycomb). It looks like it'll be handled contextually now.

Personally, I hope they allow us to remove it and/or reinstate a search button on the home bar.

I just read the P3 review and I don't see the search bar that is causing cramping and bloating in the forum this morning. This could be due to a lack of coffee, but can someone steer me in the right direction so that I can properly partake in the outrage du jour?

If you look at the homesceen of ICS, there is a google search bar at the top. You cannot remove it. That is the cause of the outrage.

I don't mind it at all. For one, it still looks good. Two, I use google search frequently. Three, search is their primary income. They do development on the OS for free, all they ask for is that we use their search. Small price to pay.

You want a ladder to get off of that horse or are you going to stay up there?

Trust me I wasn't talking down to you.

I just don't see Verizon dropping information because you are spamming their Twitter account. You can show me that this happened last time with their press release, but I still think it was just a coincidence that it was released the same time Hans started his Twitter campaign against Verizon. Like I said, do what you feel might help -- I just don't see it working.

They're referring to this part of P3's review:

Launcher: As a stock device and as an Android enthusiast I am disappointed that the search bar on the top of all home screens is not user removable. I prefer to be able to set my device up to my liking. Some may see this as nitpicking but I think in future updates making this user removable would keep in the spirit of giving the end user maximum control over their own experience.

But if you read the article, each of the other Nexus phones that have had a twitter contest associated with it, have had a release date coincide with the end of the contest.

From the article:

"There may be another clue in this tasty challenge. Okay let's look at the last "Google Nexus Challenge 2" contest on Twitter, the contest started on April 28 and ended May 8 with winners notified May 11. When was the Google Nexus S released on Sprint? The Google Nexus S was released from Sprint on ta-dah May 8!

The first Google Nexus S contest on Twitter ran from December 7-16 and the Nexus S was available for purchase on December 16 - same date as the contest ended, again."

I'm not saying the precedent isn't there. It certainly lines up with the 21st web-only rumor (and I myself am inclined to believe it won't launch till next week despite being hopeful for the 17th). I just think that when it comes to dealing with Verizon, their release dates tend to be very fluid and kept very close to the chest. We shouldn't believe anything, or come to any conclusion, until they make an official announcement.

hey guys, i probably will want to get a second battery for my gnex and i wanted to ask you guys what would be the easiest / cheapest way to do that.

-Does verizon sell spare batteries for their devices?
-Is it cheaper to get them online?
-can you get a larger battery and put it in the gnex, or is that bad for the phone?

a response would be much appreciated, thanks.

Well the Virgin Mobile thing isn't a rumor anymore. Virgin just tweeted:"we've got it first! the galaxy nexus from google is coming. pre-register now to be first in line to get one. http://bit.ly/vc8uFg ^je"
Referring to getting it before Verizon??

Probably referring to being the first in Canada. VZW is a US carrier, so as of now their US-exclusivity is still intact.
