Root Can rooting the phone change how I wake up display?

My new phone, the Optimus Slider, requires I press the power button on the top to wake up a black screen. My previous phone, the Optimus V only required that I press any of the four hardware keys along the button of the phone. This switch is super annoying.

I can't find any apps that fix this. I am desperate. If I root my phone, will I be able to make the hardware keys wake up the phone's display? FYI this phone has Android 2.3.4. Thanks in advance.

Yes, the Slider came out about a month (two max) ago. They had a sale on "Cyber Monday" where they cut the price in half and now the phone is out of stock. I guess we'll be getting a lot more rooting and customizing soon. This feature is driving me insane though... really hope someone can do something about this. I actually have a small wish list. Maybe I can post it there, haha. :)

I downloaded and installed Widget Locker and I could not get it to perform this function. Same with No LED and No Lock. Maybe you can tell me where I'm supposed to be able to do that, but I've tried a number of apps that do way too much stuff and don't do what I need.

Widgetlocker>Menu>Settings>Buttons and Inputs>Easy Wake Mode.

Easy Wake Mode description is "allow any hardware key to wake up screen".

You can search the market using keywords "broken power button" to find apps so you can use other buttons to unlock your phone.

My friend's power button broke on his OG Droid 1 and he used Any Unlock or Fix Broken Power button as the solution.
That was somewhat helpful... Fix Broken Power Button successfully switched to having the volume rocker waking the phone but 1) not the face buttons and 2) it wouldn't wake to my unlock pattern by default like it does if I press the power button, it goes to a custom screen the app created or straight to my homepage. I like having a password for my phone.

Any Unlock was very confusing and I couldn't get it to do anything.

The version of WidgetLocker I used was apparently really old. The current one is $3... given how little faith I have it'll actually work due to all the apps I've tried already unsuccessfully, and given how horrible the earlier version I downloaded was, I won't risk losing my $3. Thanks though.

I wish LG didn't change this. I'm sure for people who did not have password on their phones, they didn't like accidentally hitting the front buttons. But for people like me with passwords, they've essentially required I use two hands whenever I want to look at my phone. So. ****ing. Annoying.
