Infuse and Gingerbread update

What's the latest on this? I think that if the Captivate has almost the same specs as the Infuse, and if it got the update last week as UCKK2 (same as some leaks that were released for the Infuse), I'm thinking that we will be getting the update soon. What do you think?

Have there been any more leaks released recently, or have they settled? Where do those leaks come from, anyway? Why do they become available to the public in the first place?

Sorry for asking too many questions. It's just that I'm getting antsy about this update after each day passes without said update occurring. I'm hoping that it would be released by the end of this month, if not by the end of this week.

I believe developers at Samsung/AT&T are the ones who leak the versions. I'm not sure exactly why they do so, but regardless, if you read the threads on XDA, you can see how people are saying it's the Samsung/AT&T team that is working on the builds and releasing leaks as they continue to stabilize and better it.

From what I've seen, all official leaks have stopped for quite a while now, which apparently means the finalized version is just about ready. There are even some who commented on XDA that the last leaked version was completely stable and will most likely be the version that gets to be the "official update".

Although a lot of people fret about the Captivate getting the update earlier than the Infuse, it makes perfect sense to me. Aside from the Captivate having been released earlier than the Infuse, the Captivate was THE flaghship Samsung Android phone on AT&T when it came out. In other words, it was the Galaxy SII of its day. That means the # of Captivate owners >>>>> # of Infuse owners.

The Infuse was introduced at a very awkward time, in my opinion. The Galaxy SII had been released in Korea and the UK and while America waited months and months for the American release, they somehow decided to release the Infuse. I'm not saying most Infuse owners were like me, but me definitely, settled for the Infused. In other words, it was me giving up the Galaxy SII because the contract was up and it was starting to waste months/time/energy to continue to wait without avail for the Galaxy SII.

Regardless, aside from going off on that tangent, so my point is I think it only makes sense that the Captivate got it before we did. The Captivate sold like hotcakes and its user base is immense compared to the number of people who own the Infuse.

Well, at least we can rest assured that we will be getting the update, since they're working on it. :)

I now know that UCKL2 is the latest version of the leak, via further research. (I've done a lot of research about this update.) When was that released?

I purchased an i997 Infuse and i777 Galaxy SII Dec. 29 and went out to Samsung today and registered both phones, just in case there is a queue for firmware upgrades. Once registered, the respective phones had a "chat" box amongst other selections and I chatted with Pearlie. She says that the Gingerbread upgrade is about 2-3 weeks away from being released and that issues with servers was the delay. This delay in Gingerbread release for the Infuse begins to make sense, if you consider a million Infuse phones trying to communicate to a limited number of Samsung servers. She also said I should not try to install any of the newer leaks to my i997UCKD5 baseband. Guess I can wait a few weeks for the upgrade since my latest attempts with Kies Mini failed to terminate correctly.

You know what? That's the best piece of information I have ever read to date. Pearlie seems to be very knowledgeable about this, unlike AT&T, which was unable to provide any information about when we would get the upgrade. But now we have renewed hope! But now the question I have is, I wonder how we will need to download the update. Via a computer, Wi-Fi, or 3/4G?

If possible could you provide an explanation of why exactly the update was delayed with respect to the overwhelming Samsung server traffic? Why do our phones contact Samsung servers along with AT&T servers?

Oh wow, that's fascinating to hear! You're the first person I know who actually got a confirmation from an official. Everyone else I know only got vague answers or "We don't know" kind of replies, but that's very promising to know that someone said it is all done and ready.

That does make sense I guess. It also lines up perfectly with what the people at XDA were saying, about how the latest leak was very stable. So I guess it is a matter of AT&T getting its head together and figuring out what the best way to push the update will be.

I for one am sick to death of having waited for this. I am so ready for the closure! As much as I have enjoyed coming onto these forums and checking daily, I'd love to be able to stop, and I feel like that will happen only once the Gingerbread update comes haha >_<

(And yes, I've done the custom ROM thing, been there, done that - rendered half of my videos unplayable for some reason, so I'm on stock and will be planning on staying on stock).

I too would like to stop researching the Internet and reading forums for this information. All that research wasted too much data on my data plan.

I assure you that we will get this update. AT&T wouldn't release a press release note for nothing if they weren't going to commit to releasing all 2011-released Android phones. Also, leaks don't just come out of the blue, I have learned.

Many people have gotten the press release note all wrong. They think that the Infuse was supposed to get the update by the end of last year. I challenge you to find the statement on AT&T Customers to Enjoy Gingerbread that contains the phrase "by the end of 2011." AT&T does not lie; they already upgraded three out of the six phones listed on that site. And it looks like within 2-3 weeks, there'll be a fourth phone updated, the Infuse 4G.

So, fellow Infuse users, let us take Pearlie's word and anticipate the upgrade! The only thing that needs to happen, I think, is for Samsung to push the update to AT&T, and then it'll all be downhill from there, provided that AT&T will not install more "bloatware," as people have called them (I find that some AT&T apps, such as AT&T Code Scanner and myAT&T, are quite useful).

One thing remains, however: you guys might have more knowledge of this than I do; what exactly is Carrier IQ that the one senator was enraged about?

I know exactly how you feel. Seriously. I mean, I had fun reading all these threads and whatnot, but if I just had the darn Gingerbread update, I would've spent that time doing something else haha. This all actually started for me because my contract was up in May and I was looking to upgrade to my first smart phone. I was hanging onto the iPhone 5 rumors, but they kept pushing it back month by month, so I changed my hopes to the Galaxy SII... Which the American release also kept being rumored and then pushed back month by month. That was when I developed the habit of checking these kinds of forums/tech blogs every single day, which I now must say is quite unhealthy for someone with OCD like me @_@ haha...

But yeah, let's all be at least happy and content that it's definitely coming. I just shake my head when I see some people swearing that it's not coming. AT&T would look like fools if they promised it and then failed to deliver. And exactly like you said, there are teams working on this - I doubt months of their labor was all meant to go down the drain as being nothing more than leaks.

The biggest sadness though is that we probably won't even notice much of a difference on the Gingerbread. I think for me at least, it'll be like a mental/psychological closure after all this time haha.

The Carrier IQ thing I'm not so well-versed in either, but from the gist of it that I do know, it was something about how they're able to track/trace your information/activities or something like that. Or I could be totally wrong haha.

Regarding your former upgrade plan, I too was going to get the "iPhone 5"; this was back in May and I, like you, checked Google News every day for the latest information regarding that. After finding out that the iPhone would be released in the fall, I got disappointed, because I was getting a phone in the summer.

When I walked into an AT&T store and said that I wanted the iPhone 4, the clerk discouraged me from getting that and steered me to the Infuse, saying that it was better. So I trusted him and got it. I never regret buying this phone, even to this day.

The talk about the Gingerbread update has been going around since late July. I got quite excited about that once I learned what I could benefit from that. So in August, I kept checking Google News for the latest info and even had it set to email me every time there is a new search result for "infuse gingerbread update" (without the quotes). It's still set to do that.

This obviously shows my heightened anticipation and obsession about the update. When the update didn't come as quickly as I thought, I became worried. Now I guess there isn't a need to. Except for one thing.

I chatted with Samsung, and coincidentally ended up with Pearlie. At first, I beat around the bush, asking about the HSPA+ 21.1 mbps and how I never experienced those speeds before (have you?). She said that it depends on the type of Wi-Fi network I use (huh???). Then I let it out: I asked if the Gingerbread update would enhance the HSPA+ chip. She said that that was correct. Upon asking her when it would be released, there seemed to be an automated response from her that said Samsung is unable to speculate about when/if the update will be released, since it could lead to inaccurate information. I asked her if she had any information about the update itself, but she said that if she did, she'd have helped me.

I'm still certain that we will get the update in 2-3 weeks, but could somebody explain this chat conversation? It's probably the same Pearlie that Stauchwall chatted with, but why did she not tell me what she told Stauchwall about the update?

That response is actually the one I've seen most people report having gotten from Samsung. That's also why I was amazed that Stauchwall said she told him that it's coming. I don't know if it's the same person (maybe they just use the same ID), or maybe even if it is, by rule, they aren't allowed to let us know exactly when it's scheduled on coming (and maybe when she was talking to Stauchwall, she let it slip).

I can see why they'd do that, since if we got word that an official rep from Samsung/AT&T said it was coming in XX weeks/days and then they end up having issues at some step and push it back further, we'd probably have a fit just like when that guy carelessly tweeted about how the Infuse was supposed to get the GB update back in... Was it Oct/Nov? I forget, but yeah. I remember Infuse owners went berserk and called/emailed/bombarded them with why it wasn't coming out when it was promised by the guy who tweeted it.

For the speed, I think it really depends on your geographic location. AT&T's HSPA+ network isn't spread evenly over the States - there are cities/areas where the speed is blazing fast while in my area too, I get really slow speed (thank goodness I'm on WiFi 90% of the time).

Once again, I think the Infuse is in an awkward niche due to its release time. The newer line of LTE phones are going to benefit from AT&T's expansion of LTE towers, but I'm not sure if AT&T plans on expanding its HSPA+ coverage since they've got bigger fish to fry with LTE (especially since expanding LTE coverage seems to be the new "Race of the Carriers" between Sprint/Verizon/AT&T). I'm not to technically insightful on the network stuff though so maybe HSPA+ will get better coverage, I don't know, but as far as I'm concerned, no I've never experienced the "blazing fast speeds" marketed for this phone on the "4G" haha.

By the way, listening to your obsession about seeing/hearing news/rumors for the phones and then now the update made me feel better haha because that's exactly what was happening to me... And is still happening, since I roam this forum, the XDA, and that Android Central one on a daily basis. I feel like some creepy scavenger, manically waiting for that GB update! @_@

You're right about everything you said and implied here. And if Pearlie let it slip like that when she technically wasn't supposed to, it's bound to be true.

Hopefully it is.... Now i want ics! They will probably not even release leaks for ics though, they will probably end development for this phone after gingerbread (3rd party dev over on xda will still be on lol but no more official). Ics hope through cyanogen mod only lol.

I think the Infuse is capable of running Ice Cream Sandwich. But that wouldn't matter if Samsung/AT&T will not release it for this phone. Who knows? Only time will tell whether we will be able to get ICS. Let's hope we do (but let's not get our hopes up too much, lest we become dismayed should we not get that update in the future).

Great news! Samsung has now made Kies Mini available for the Infuse 4G on their official website!

Samsung

When the Gingerbread update for the Captivate came out, a lot of Infuse owners were saying "Eh, we won't get it anyways, because the only way is through Kies, and Samsung doesn't support the Infuse on Kies."

Well, here we go now. Why did Samsung decide to make Kies Mini (along with drivers) suddenly available for the Infuse yesterday? I bet it's because the Gingerbread update is right around the corner.

Can't wait!

I too am excited about Samsung finally having something new to download and that the reason being is because the Gingerbread update is imminent.

But as soon as I downloaded Kies mini, it said that there was a newer version available. I found that to be weird, but I let it go ahead anyway. But after about 30% of the file downloaded, it said that I got disconnected from the Internet. No siree, I didn't. I tethered my Infuse to my computer for Internet, since I have the 4GB plan on AT&T and I have no other way to get Internet access at home.

A side note here that's worth mentioning for me: when I downloaded Kies mini, the download process kept getting interrupted and required multiple tries to get it to download (luckily, every time I clicked the download link, it started right where it left off). Now I'm getting messages that I got disconnected from the Internet while trying to download the latest version of Kies. Does technology really hate me like that? :p

Anyway, I cancelled the update after it said the connection error. Kies mini opened and then prompted me to connect my phone. So I connected it and selected "Kies (Firmware Update)" on the phone. But nothing happened on the Kies. I tried multiple times, but it didn't work.

Why is that? Is it because I don't have the latest version?

I'm not sure what happened for yours, but for me, after I downloaded the software and installed it, it asked for me to reboot my computer. After that, when I turned on Kies Mini (which had a shortcut on the desktop), it opened perfectly and asked me to connect my phone.

Once I connected my phone, Windows (at the bottom right) was saying it was installing the drivers which took a while (around 3 minutes or so), during which time Kies Mini didn't do anything (it just said Please Connect Phone).

After the drivers finished installing, Kies Mini recognized my phone and I was able to open it to view its files. There was also a button for "Upgrade to Latest Software" or something like that, but it was grayed out, I guess obviously since the GB update isn't out yet.

Mine did install successfully, and asked me to reboot, so I did that right away. After rebooting, I opened Kies and it checked for a newer version, at which it did. So it started downloading and then gave me that error message.

Maybe the problem is because I already have the drivers installed?

According to Kies mini, the latest version of it is 1.0.0.11084_3. The version I have installed is 1.0.0.11011_4. Can you see if you have any version updates for yours?

Mine is 1.0.0.11084_3.

Oh you know what, come to think of it, that's what I did. I had drivers already installed for the Captivate (due to when I wanted to root/install custom ROM) because I had installed the Kies Mini for the Captivate so that I could tinker with my phone.

I was afraid it would lead to issues so before I installed the official Infuse Kies Mini, I went to Control Pannel and uninstalled all the drivers.

Maybe you should try that.

Also, do you have 32-bit or 64-bit Windows? I have 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate with all of the latest updates. I heard Kies and its mini counterpart are notorious for being incompatible with 64-bit Windows.

I have 64-bit, but I'm just regular Home Edition Windows 7, I don't know if that makes a difference though. And I'm updated on all the service packs and whatnot.

In that case, then, I will have the Kies mini download the newer version when I have better Internet access. It's kind of weird how it didn't install the newest version in the first place.

I can't get Kies mini to work! I tried uninstalling the drivers uninstalling Kies mini several times. Then I downloaded a new copy of both the drivers and Kies mini from the website and reinstalled Kies mini. When it installed and asked me to connect the phone, I did so, and two drivers installed (Samsung USB Modem and Samsung USB Composite Device). When those finished, nothing happened on Kies mini. It was getting frustrating. I did all this several times.

I set the USB connection on my phone to go to Kies (firmware update) when connecting. Still no dice.

What in the world am I doing wrong? Is it because I have 64-bit? Should I install 32-bit and hope that works? I really don't want to do that, so if there is something else I'm doing wrong, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll have to start everything from scratch (i.e., reinstall Windows 7 as 32-bit). I know that sounds drastic, but if there's nothing else I can do, what other options are there?

I just checked my computer for you and it is "Windows 7 Home Premium Edition" running 64-bit.

I don't think the 64-bit is the problem (unless it's got to do with yours being the Ultimate, although I don't see how that should be the problem).

Once again, what I did was:
1) Uninstall drivers from Kies Mini Captivate (which I had used for flashing/rooting before).
2) Install Kies Mini from the Samsung site.
3) Restart the computer.
4) Connect the phone.
5) Right-hand bottom corner of Windows showed detection of new hardware.
6) Took about 3 ~ 5 minutes installing drivers (automatically happened, I didn't do anything).
7) Kies Mini shows the phone as "Unregistered Device" (but I can still browse through it and whatnot).

That's really all I did and didn't encounter any issues. Is your phone rooted at all? I don't know if I mentioned this earlier, but my phone is absolutely as it came out of the box. I used ODIN to flash it back to stock, then followed through a factory reset, and then followed with the official AT&T upgrade to UCKH1.

If your phone is rooted/running a different ROM, maybe you should try doing that first; I hope that works.

I am not rooted, and this is my first smartphone.

Do you remember what or how many drivers were installed when you connected your phone to the computer?
