Help Un bricked, now problems

Hi, i am good with computers, but not so much phones. I had bricked a samsung galaxy precedent, and sent it to mobiletechvideos.c o m to have it un bricked. it was un bricked, and i recieved it back today, but now it has many small issues, which are as follows: it has a ? inside of the battery in the status bar, and when i try to connect to the computer in usb transfer mode it removes the sd card instead, and another issue is that the display is jumpy, i'm not sure how to explain it but when i'm trying to type a word the cursor jumps forward and back after each letter, and doesn't stop, pictures on the market jump on and off the screen, and when the time or signal strength changes on the status bar it jumps forward and back to the correct time or signal strength. And the auto rotate sensor no longer works. And also i restored contacts from a back up, and if i call a number it shows up with the name, but if i go to contacts, it says that i have no contacts. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix these problems? please help. thanks


and now the home and search buttons do not work





Okay so i reset factory data and the home and search buttons are working again, but still having the original problems. Is there a way to reset my phone back TO THE WAY IN CAME IN THE BOX since it was repaired using a jtag service?????????? or is there a simple solution to my issues??????? PLEASE HELP

1) You could always insist that they do the job right. If you paid by credit card you could have the charge reversed if they don't.

2) You could flash the phone with a new ROM - that would probably clear it up. The Area51 2.3 ROM is really nice (and gives you tons of storage space).

Thank you Rukbat for the reply. Could you help out with this rom? I'm fairly new at using roms. My phone is rooted, but i don't know much else besides that. And do you know if that rom is compatible with my precedent? Also do you know if i can just restore back to the way it was when it came out of the box, even though it has been repaired using a jtag service? Thanks in advanced.

As far as the AA51 2.3 rom goes what you need to do is go to the all thing root section for the precedent in this forum and go to the arearom 2.3 post. Click on download and instructions should be given from there make sure to use Odin install if your not on gingerbread yet

Ok guys, I really appreciate the help, but i'm still not sure how to proceed. Here is what i have on my phone:

Android 2.2.2
Clock work ROM Manager v5.0.0.6
CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.6
SuperUser 3.0.7 with Su binary v3.0.3.2

I don't have busy box, or anything else on the device besides normally apps like gmail, and I don't have anything on my computer as far as an odin installer or anything like that. I'm just really trying to be cautious since I already bricked it once, and just want to make sure I don't do anything wrong.

So what else do i need to put a Rom on this precedent?

and like i said, when i go into recovery mode it says "CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.6" but when i go to rom manager on the device and try to Check For Rom Updates, it says "You must have ClockworkMod recovery installed before continuing! Install the recovery through ROM Manager first."and it has the two options, install or cancel. i press install and it says "Confirm phone model......" but my phone model is not listed so where do go from there?

First off, no rom managers!! Everyone who seems to try a rom manager or anything like it on this phone ends up with a paper weight.

AreaRom Install How To
​

Here is what to do:
(Read all of this, don't try to be "smart" and skip ahead!!!!)

1. Download the AreaRom Odin

2. Unzip it to a folder on your computer

3. Hook up a USB cord to your phone -> Computer

--------

4. Download AreaRom v2.3

5. Place the AreaRom2.3.zip on you phones SD card
(dont unzip it, just download and transfer it)

--------

6. Shut your phone off

7. Hold - Volume Down + Camera + Power (hit power last)

8. Your phone should now say DOWNLOAD
(Yellow dont show good on here with with background)

9. Open the Odin.exe we unzipped to your computer

10. Put the .OPS file in the OPS slot

11. Put the Boot.tar in the Boot slot

12. Put the Phone.tar in the Phone slot

13. Put the PDA.tar in the PDA slot

14. Start the Odin

15. Wait for your phone to restart
(in the rare case it doesn't, give it about 5 mins then restart it yourself)

---------

16. After your phone boots up, shut it off

17. Hold Camera + Volume Up + Power (hit power last)

18. You should now be in recovery mode
a. Press the Volume buttons to navigate up and down
b. Press camera to select stuff
c. Press power to go back

19. Select: Install zip from SDcard

20. Select: Choose zip from SDcard

21. Find: AreaRom2.3.zip

22. Select: AreaRom2.3.zip

23. Select: Yes - Install AreaRom2.3.zip

24. Wait for your Phone to restart

----Your not done, keep reading!------

25. Wait for you phone to boot back up
a. This my take 5 mins the first boot, this is normal...Dont Panic!

26. Hold Power button and select recovery

27. Wait for phone to boot into recovery

28. Select: wipe data/factory reset

29. Select: Yes -- delete all user data

30. wait for it to be done

31. Select: reboot system now

32. Phone will boot back into recovery
a. We have no idea why it does this
b. Don't bother asking why

33. Select: reboot system now

34. Your Done, and if you did everything in this order it worked!!

The closest Rom to stock can be found in the 'root my precedent' thread. It uses Odin so the procedure is much the same as above. It's the most stable and sounds like what you're looking for.

Thank u so much xPureEvilx. I just have two more questions. When u say to connect to computer using usb, you do not what me to turn on usb transfer (because it causes my phone to safely remove memory card instead) but instead turn on usb debugging correct? And since we will be starting with an odin is it ok that i'm running on2.2.2 and not 2.3? Thanks, i really appreciate it.

oh one more thing, should i have my memory card blank before i start?

The megaupload link is dead but it's posted elsewhere further down. It's the stock rom with root. It will give the least issues until you want to experiment further with arearom or one of the cyanogen mods

Exactly. It's what you'll see when you pull your phone out of the box, turn it on for the first time and connect to StraightTalk. It'll have the same apps, same launcher.. etc etc. The only difference is, you'll have root access and SuperUser installed.

The advantage is, you'll have a stock operating system with everything StraightTalk figured worked best for the phone. It runs 100% no problems. If your phone has a hardware problem this will show it as it *should* run fine with this rom.

The disadvantages are, it's slower than the other roms and it's Froyo (not Gingerbread).

The short version: This rom should make your phone run like it was 'new'. Given your issues with that phone, if this one shows the same problems, then it's not the software, it's the hardware. If this rom fixes your problems, then go ahead and move forward with one of the better roms.

Once you move forward and install clockworkmod, through Odin, and read through the steps for the other roms, flashing is a pretty pain free system. My cyanogenmod install was before the install instructions were cleaned up, but I've bricked more than one Android device before so I muddled through - no harm done.

You can jump ahead if you want. I feel troubleshooting is always best when you start with baby-steps.

*If you can get to recovery, then almost all android devices are fixable. The moment of "damn, what did I do", is generally something you can correct. Just stay away from 'ROM Tools' in the market - that will seriously mess your day up.

thanks for your help too Rukbat, but i couldn't find a working link to the rom, so i just went ahead and put the stock back on it, and it is working just fine! Thanks again tho!

You really should look for the 2.3 ROM (it's on the area51 site - http://androidarea51.com/releases/samsprec/odins/gingerbreadbootloaderodin.zip for Odin, http://androidarea51.com/releases/samsprec/arearom/AreaRom2.3.zip for the ROM) and try it. Depending on how much room you give it (which depends on how large an SD card you have), the amount of program installation space you get borders on the insane. I gave mine a 2GB partition (on a 16GB card - they're about $15), and after installing about 170MB of apps, I still have space to install 1.74GB more. And if I want to go crazy I can just make that partition larger and do it over again. No more actual internal user space limitation. (It's still RAM-cramped, and the CPU is still a slow single core, but this ROM makes the Precedent a pretty decent phone.)

.. or either of the Cyanogen roms. They all do the same thing.

AFAIK, there's still a problem with the Cyano with MMS. As soon as that's fixed I plan to burn one, just to see what the differences are.

Other than being on CDMA, I can't complain too much about the Precedent now. Even the lack of RAM is seldom a real problem. (And my fat fingers will continue to be a problem until they put a 9" tablet into a 4" case.)

I suggest an MMS app from the market , like GO or Handsent.

Bought this Samsung Galaxy Precedent for my granddaughter who is 14 years old. Since the phone was relatively inexpensive I decided to try and play around with it a bit. It has a 8GB SDCARD installed. Wanted to increase the memory on the phone so that she could load more apps.

I have followed all of the instructions for upgrading to 2.3. Once I start the ODIN application it does find my phone. I load the .ops file - no problem, load the boot.tar, no problem, load the phone.tar, no problem.

However, when I try to load the pda.tar it come up with the message "INVALID IMAGE TYPE.

I am running Android 2.2.2 with build FROYO EH13.

Any ideas on what may be causing the problem with the pda.tar file might be.
