You don't...

Add the following folders to your card:
  • alarms
  • notifications
  • ringtones

Then add the tones you want to the relevant folder (eg an mp3 for your alarm clock to the folder 'alarms', etc).

Hi,

Just tried adding dir e:\Ringtones, moved tone from MP3 into it, re-booted and ended up with default tone, put tone back into MP3 dir ran music player selected tone to play>menu use as ringtone and it worked ok.

It seems if the music player can't find/play it, it can't be selected as a ringtone.

Also didn't have any joy with a custom alarm tone in it's own dir.

Max.

The folders don' t need to be within the music folder..

I have directories for notifications, alarms and ringtones at the root of the card and they all work on my Magic, as they did on my G1.

I suspect this is more likely to be that the card was not rescanned after disconnecting the phone from USB. I have noticed that periodically my Magic does not rescan it's card - usually reconnecting and disconnecting or rebooting the phone clears it, kicking the rescan of the card into life and making the tones appear in the relevant places. I have a 16gb card, which may be a cause of this..

You may have to format your card to get the folders to work correctly. I don't know why, but some people can't simply add those notifications, alarms, ringtones folders to the root of the SD card -- sometimes they have to format the card and then add those folders to the root directory.

The added bonus is that anything added to those folders (ringtones, alarms, notifications) cannot be seen by the default music player -- so you don't have to worry about alarms showing up in your library.

Hi punkzanyj,

OK formatting SD card, I then need answers to what was one question and now is two.

1] when formatting is over does the Hero automatically write the existing info back to the card, or do I need to copy all data and replace after.

2] searching threads about formatting, do I use the PC and format fat32 or use the internal format command on the phone.

Perhaps a sticky on formatting and tones is called for, seems to be lots of questions on both.

Thanks,
Max.
P.S. Am running a bog standard Orange Hero.[48hrs old]

This worked a treat for me. Many thanks. Somebody mentioned needing to re-read the SD card. I mounted the card via USB, copied across the tone files from my PC to the root of the card, unmounted the SD card and unplugged the USB cable. This gave the notification that the SD card was being prepared and then my new tones were visible from within the settings list for default ringtones and notifications. Blondies "Hanging on the telephone" works well :)
