Root Rooting

I have created a one click root method for WIndows, Linux, and MAC based off jcase's gordita root. Link to jcase's exploit at the bottom of this post.

[ROOT] Virgin Mobile Security Update Now Rooted!!! Thanks jcase!! - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

Just to add a bit of info, this method is for the newest Virgin Mobile update and whenever they start rolling out Optimus V's with this update.

To determine your root method go to settings > About Phone and check your baseband version.

If baseband ends with ZV4 you can use SuperOneClick or Gingerbreak

If baseband ends with ZV5 you can use Gingerbreak

If baseband ends with ZV9 you will need to use the rooting method at the link in previous post

Could you please post more detail on the ADB command lines? I can get the serial number of my phone from the adb list, but cannot get the push command to work. What were the actual directory paths that worked for you? Thanks!

Try uninstalling/removing all emulators and unplug any other phones and this will work without needing the serial number. Just type devices to make sure your device is the only one there

For a little clarification, ZV4 can be rooted with superoneclick or gingerbreak, ZV5 can be rooted using gingerbreak. If you have installed the ZV9 update from VM then you will need the gordita root by jcase. Check your baseband before you start to make sure what you have and the root method required. Read the stickies and follow the instructions.

I'm pretty sure this will root all the versions...

The issue with a one-click method is that you sometimes have to do a factory reset to get things to work. I don't like the idea of including a factory reset in a one-click solution, since that should definitely be a choice left up to the user (hopefully an informed choice). ;)

And yes, the Gordita exploit should work on any android device with an accelerometer that has configuration files written to during the init process, and then init doesn't reset the permissions on that file. That's the magick behind the exploit, symlink the recovery partition to a partition that gets written to by init, and that doesn't have it's permissions reset by init afterwards. Init has root permissions, and normally sets all folder's owner/permissions properly, but not in this case. That's what needs to be patched, but since it requires a reboot, it's not a "we must keep this secret till it's fixed" type of security hole. They can fix it by adding a step to reset the permissions, or by changing the timing of when the accelerometer's config file is written (if done earlier, this hole wouldn't exist).

The exploit has been properly reported to AOSP, and accepted by those who should know about it. You can expect future carrier/vendor updates to include patches to fix the issue (just like they did with SuperOneClick and Gingerbreak). ;)

Well, tbh there's alot of people out there who just bought this phone, and who do want to root, but aren't familiar with adb or even android for that matter, this is for them... When that update comes, I'm sure most people will know not to update their phones unless they want to be stuck unrooted until a developer can come by and help them out you know... But anyways, I attached the file, and put more warning in there than I could count, just to make sure people know what they're doing before they do it. ... and you said any android device.. well htere are some unrootable (by Gingerbreak and SuperOneClick) Optimus Ms... do you think that with the right recovery files, those could be rooted? just my two cents...

Nice work, I'm sure it will help a lot of users out! :thumb:

I would definitely give the Gordita root exploit a try on those Optimus Ms that are supposedly unrootable. Any custom recovery known to work on the OM should be fine to use. However, being the first is dangerous, so testers should be warned and truly willing to chance bricking!

You got a very good point there... I think the flashable zip is ok to work with... but I would really want to find an actually flash_image file... time to search the forums :p.. or make up my own lol

if the ZV4 can only use super one click or gingerbreak, and neither of them work any longer.....then what???
You're a bit confused...:stupido2:

1) The Gordita Root exploit should work on any model Optimus V, regardless of radio/firmware version

2) OVs running the stock VirginMobile rom that comes with ZV4 baseband can still be rooted with either SuperOneClick or Gingerbreak

3) "What doesn't work anymore" is referencing Gingerbreak not working on the ZV9 based stock rom, so "it doesn't work anymore," for people using the ZV9 based stock rom. ;)

Thanks! New to android and picked an Optimus V. This one-click method worked perfectly. I was able to root my phone in just a few minutes.

Dumb question.... new to the android and rooting.... How would I go about unrooting if I ever need to?

Thanks!

You can unroot using Gingerbreak.apk (Google it) or Super One Click (Google It lol); I haven't tested this though... and tbh I dnt think I ever will... If need comes, I'll borow another Optimus V and use it to test an unroot script... either that or just flash a nandroid backup of your stock rom (You did backup right :p)
