Can you please provide us with some information on your Evo?

1. What's your hboot version?
2. Are you fully rooted (S-OFF)?
3. Which ROM/Kernel are you currently running?
4. Are you using the stock messaging or a third party app (handscent, etc.)?
5. When did your Evo begin to start sending SMS messages by itself?

Initially I would wipe cache/dalvik cache in recovery. It's a general fix all for most small problems.

... What website?

If its not google play and not xda for the official free version.... then you found your problem.

Delete the program from your SD card. Wipe EVERYTHING in recovery and flash a new ROM. Thats the only way to make sure its gone. Hell, I'd go as far as reformatting the card and starting completely fresh.

ONLY get apps from official sources

I realize people are hesitant to buy something they haven't tried. So I usually link them to the free one on XDA and ask that they support him if they find themselves using it.

That's a great method of practice but, how often do you think people follow through and purchase it after getting it for free? It's like downloading a whole music album online (for free) and expecting people to buy it retail afterwards. Some may do the right thing, but many won't.

Many Dev's receive very little (if anything sometimes) for the great work they do.

Well said. And there are few apps I have purchased that I regret purchasing. Maybe even none that I regret purchasing.

The free one never got updated, so if they want the latest app they gotta pay. I understand your point though.

I know I wish I wouldn't known about the free version sooner so I could have put it on my dads phone after rooting it. He doesn't trust putting his credit card "out there" so he had no way of paying for it.
