Hi all. I'm trying to connect my GP5 to my PC using Kies and cannot successfully get a connection. I have tried on 3 differnt PC's. One Windows 7, and 2 Windows XP PC's. All attempts end in a error message "reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC studio) mode". I have done the following in an attempt to troubleshoot:

a) Went through "troubleshooting connection error" within Kies (on 3 PC's)
b) Uninstalled and reinstalled Kies (on 2 PC's)
c) Toggled USB debbugging as suggested in other threads I've search here and "Applications" threads
d) Tried "Mass Storage" mode when connecting USB cable
e) Tried different cables (in case SGP5 cable was defective)
f) Had a couple Gin and Tonics (after a-e)

I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong (if anything). Any one have a suggestion?

I have so far refused to install Kies. I obtained the USB drivers needed from XDA so I could root. As far as I can determine, the only other reason for Kies is updates and I am quite cynical that these devices are anywhere but on the very bottom of Samsung's list for updates if at all, so I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I'm hoping someone at XDA will help out there too.

Not much help, sorry, but I generally am suspicious of Manufacturers sticking their own layer of software over things.

Hi Hook, drted. Yeah, I haven't read too many references to Kies in these here forums. I was anticipating using Kies for firmware updates, and it looks like the only path if firmware updates become available.

OTOH, I'm not currently having any problems, so I should probably just leave well enough alone. And as Hook said, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I have wasted enough time trying to get Kies to work.

Okay, I stumbled across the solution by accident. For anyone wanting to use Kies a connection is made by going into "Settings" on your SGP, choose "Wireless and Network", choose "USB Settings" and there it is "Samsung Kies". Select it, and you can then plug your SGP to your pc. My pc had to install some drivers and reboot, but it connected up as expected afterwards.

As some of you may know Kies is not a bad app but has limited use. I was able to confirm I had the latest firmware, which was my main goal. There are some sync options and import/export options I wish I would have discovered earlier (I should have read the manual more thoroughly). I'll play with it later and see if there is some usefulness. Good day to all.
