what kind of phone or carrier for old woman?

My mother in law who is in her mid 80s has been having frequent problems with her landline Verizon phone system. It has been the case that when my wife tries to call to find out how Mom is she gets a continual ringing of the phone but no one answers. This is worrisome given Mom's age.
We think it is time that Mom gets a cellphone if, for no other reason, as a backup to her current landline.

My wife and I are both satisfied with Virgin Mobile. We both have the Optimus V phone. I doubt that that would be a good choice for an old woman with no technical prowess.

Can anyone recommend a large buttonned VERY easy to use phone. We're happy with Virgin Mobile but if you think a different cell carrier would be better then I would take your recommendation into consideration.

No idea, but I did a quick Google search, and I think something like this might be good. You do need to get a provider with good coverage in her area though, so just any carrier wouldn't work

metropcs has a deal right now for a feture phone for ether 40 50 or 60$ and 25$ a month for unlimited talk and text. been with metro for 2 years and there network is getting better everyday

virgin mobile has assurance wireless which will be free with 250 min. and a simple phone called jax

I'm going to second this as it would be something I would also recommend for someone in that age bracket. The price is perfect for someone on a fixed income, and the minutes roll over.
