Help Help with Optimus V - Tethering & Portable Hotspot

Hi all... Every thread I look at is already locked. I don't know if this is posted elsewhere or not but I was actually surprised to find out that alot of people are having problems with there tethering. I've had the Optimus V for over a year and not a single problem with it. There are more tutorials around here than I can shake a stick at, so I'll just keep it simple and tell you my setup:

LG-VM670
2.3.7 Gingerbread
ClockworkMod Recovery v3.2.0.1
CyanogenMod-7.1.0-BACKside-IHO-KANG

I don't have a hotspot app... in this version, it's actually built into the settings menu: Settings>Wireless & networks>Tethering & portable hotspot. It allows for USB tethering and Portable Wi-Fi hotspot under infrastructure and allows you to name and secure your hotspot with WPA2 PSK encryption.

Why do all that, just install FoxFi
on a stock V and WiFi works as designed,
and that goes for many brands of phone,
no rooting or hacking needed to tether.
A simple free app from google play.

People can get the MiFi Hotspot right here. Rates for this hotspot paid service are on the Plan Rates tab. If some have issues with getting hotspot to work, they can call Virgin Mobile and discuss why the hotspot that they are paying for is not working.

I would not reccome d do it it....its illegal....its stealing ur not paying for it and Virgin mobile doesn't offer it...
Yet...if they find out your doing it they can sue you or terminate your services....those apps mightnot work either is you downloaded the security update.

read the TOS, downloading apps from the goole market doesn't break the TOS[google market is pre installed], if google allows it on the market, just like the rooting and hacking programs, its legal VIA the Virgin TOS.

Call Virgin Mobile and ask them if they care if you hotspot without purchasing the Mifi or paying their monthly fee.

Taking something without paying for it or without the owners expressed permission is stealing. It matters not how you steal it.

calling someone who only knows how to read the pre printed scripted cue sheet of answers would get you no where on any subject. When you say turn to page 3 paragraph 4 section 3b of the TOS they wil go "huh?"

And MR pot id bet you money that if the courts will rule that you can hack and jail break your phone like you did which is also said not allowed in the TOS, they would rule that data is data and how you use it, doesn

It really infuriates me to no end that I pay for everything I have and here comes Joe Blow who takes it without paying. Not only does he take it without paying, he sees nothing wrong with it and brags about being throttled. I loath people who steal what I have to pay for.

OK folks... Android Forums is here to provide a resource for enthusiastic Android owners to discuss their favorite obsession. That said we are not here as a medium for Android owners to argue.

Whether or not tethering is legal on your specific device is a matter for you and your carrier to deal with. If it's illegal and you tether... well you know what'll possibly happen.

All that we ask is that you follow the simple rules provided by our site owner... attack the issue and not each other. So now that people are off their horses, saddles have been stowed, and horses brushed and fed, I'm hoping we can continue this discussion calmly.

Thanks FoxFi worked great to tether my ASUS TF.
But I agree it may be on sly side, I plan on only using it if my back is up agaisnt the wall and I have no other option. There is free WIFI all over the place.

my wifii tether works but not usb tether. the computer says it doesn't have the drivers even though i installed lg mobile drivers.. any ideas?

VM has bandwidth monthly limits in place now, so using your phone as a hotspot will probably chew through your monthly limits pretty quickly and your connection will be throttled to rather slow speeds. Personally I only use my phones hotspot when I have an emergency need to use my laptop for work and have no other way to access the Internet.

If you do, you MIGHT be tempted to look at OPTIMUS SLIDER instructions to root which work for the Optimus V 2.2... and then you might be tempted to watch her video on wifi install for the OPTIMUS SLIDER which work for the Optimus V.. except install the GREEEN version of the WIFI (not yellow as she does) if you are doing it for Optimus V 2.2 or greater.. SAME Developer at Marketplace, Same NAME, just a GREEN icon.. not the yellow one.

Don't do it... you might end up rooted and wifi tethering and that is illegal.. so don't do it.

She makes it SO EASY


I went there, and sadly now I am rooted and wifi able with my Optimus V 2.2 and I am just sadly a very bad girl . Bad.. but VERY happy.

And I am a TECH-no-IDIOT! So her walk throughs are great for dummies like me!
