Android 2.5 FroYo (they decided against Flan for some reason)
- All the Google apps (Browser, GMail, Calendar, etc.) will be separated from the core OS and downloadable through the Market, just like they did with Maps
- Linux 2.6.32 kernel
- Multitouch keyboard
- 3D UI enhancements
- Rewritten Dalvik JIT compiler for increased speed
- New memory manager that will make Task Managers entirely unnecessary (they're already largely unnecessary)

Android 2.6 Gingerbread
- Linux Kernel 2.6.33 or 34
- The fundamental Android components like the Launcher, Dialer, etc. will be downloadable from the Market just like apps

After Gingerbread, Google is going to dramatically slow down their major release cycle so that ideally handset manufacturers and carriers can have time to get all devices on the same version. And with the core apps and components being able to be separately downloaded from the Market, the need for an OTA update for a whole new OS becomes few and far between.

Prepare your future gripes about slow updates now. :)
