Help My 2 issues: screen going black when making call and screen locks?

Hey guys - see if you can help with these two issues?

1) After I make a call, the screen goes black in a matter of seconds. I'm typically using a headset when I notice this. To end the call (or enter numbers in a call menu) I need to press the sleep button to get the screen to light up again. This is a pain in the a$$.

I have the screen timeout set for 2 mins.

2) About once or twice a day the home screen will lock where I can't press anything. I need to reboot to fix.

About my phone:
-Build #2
-Everything else works perfect
-Everything turned off...4G, WiFi...etc.

So you aren't putting the phone to your ear after dialing? Because the phone has a proximity sensor to turn the screen off so you won't press buttons with your face. As far as the screen locking... Are you using any live wallpapers from the market? Any type of Task Manager?

Correct, when using my headset the proximity sensor does't get triggered, but the phone goes black on it's own. The prox sensor is in the upper left corner and nothing is touching it.

The other issue is the screen locks. Everything is off the shelf, wallpaper...etc. Nothing running to cause the locks. Only app running is the app killer.

Uninstall your App Killer and reboot and run it without the App Killer to see if that might be closing something it shouldn't be. I learned my lesson on Task Killers through months of trial and error with my Hero.

I was having similar issues and found that turning off auto_brightness fixed it.

Get rid of the Task Killer NOW!!!!

This is my first Android phone. I'm really OCD with my computer, I always have to make sure I know what's running and I don't have anything I don't need running in the background. No surprise, the Task Killer was the first app I downloaded.

I was very dissatisfied with my phone- constant lock ups- sometimes lasting a minute, sometimes only being fixed by reboots, my home screens reverting to older ones after rebooting, apps force closing way too often. I read around and learned that, because of the way the Android OS is built, task killers are a very bad thing. The details aren't important, and I don't even understand it all, but I got rid of my task killer and I'm not having the same problems anymore.

So to fix your second problem, kiss your task killer goodbye.

I'm having similar problems, but they just started today, and I've had my phone for 1.5 years. I followed your advice and got rid of my task killer but still having issues. Any other suggestions? Here are some more details of my problems....

This is very strange, but I noticed today that my camera is no longer working. I have no idea why, but it just goes black when I select camera. I have restarted my phone, took out the battery, etc. and nothing. Also, I even tried downloading other camera apps, and they won't work either.

Even more frustrating, though, is that my phone goes black when I make or receive a call. The calls do not get dropped, but when the call is over, I can't even hang up, as my screen is black. It's weird because my phone is still "ON," but I obviously can't do anything. The only thing I can do is take out the battery, put it back in, and turn the phone back on. Then, it works perfectly normal...until I make or receive another call. I have no idea what to do.

Can anyone help? I'd really appreciate it, as I use my phone for everything!

Hello there. Sorry you are having these issues, and I do see that you posted your problem over in the Nexus 1 forums...keep an eye on that post as the folks over there might have more insight on that issue as I am unfamiliar with that phone.

Is there an update available for it? Perhaps a factory reset is in order but just back up what you need to because the reset will wipe out your personal data and apps ...

I took my phone into Sprint today with the same problem. The screen goes black immediately after connecting a phone call and then will freeze up the phone after the call is complete.

The Sprint tech said the light sensor that shuts the screen off when the phone is put up to your ear during a call is corroded and faulty. It randomly will freeze up the phone. They couldn't fix the problem but did tell me I could pay the $100 deductible to get the phone replaced.

Sooooo, pay $100 and get the EVO replaced or learn to live with it. I think I'll do the latter and cancel the insurance until I get an LTE phone once they switch it on in my hometown.

Settings-Display-Brightness...un check Automatic Brightness

The problem resolved itself immediately for me.
