Hello. I am a first time android user choosing between at&t's two premier phones the samsung galaxy s3 and htc one x+.

When it comes to hardware I am a bit confused.

The Samsung Galaxy s3 is rocking a Dual Core SnapDragon s4 clocked at 1.5ghz, and 2 gigs of ram. It also features a Qualcomm adreno 225 GPU.

The HTC One X+ is rocking a Quad core Tegra 3 processor from nvidia clocked at 1.7 ghz, but only 1 gig of ram. I'm not sure who makes the GPU but it is clocked at 520 mhz.

According to most benchmark tests I have noticed the One X+ coming out on top however I am very novice when it comes to android devices and confused as to what this means.

With these specs, which unit genuinely has more processing power? What are the differences in their processing capabilities?

I'd take more RAM. Benchmark tests aren't fully reliable anyway, as the actual experience when you are using the phone itself is how it's set up, what apps you have running and syncing and whatever all the time and a lot of stuff. RAM is the more important stat for Android IMO.

Besides, choosing either based on benchmarks is not a very good way to do it. Its more on Sense vs TouchWiz too.

I wouldn't pick either if you're going to be locking yourself in for 2yrs.

The One X+ is a better phone, however, if you plan on putting an AOSP ROM on there, don't hold your breath.

I believe the ATT S3 has had the bootloader unlocked (someone correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't been following development on ATT phones) so you would have the option of potentially flashing an AOSP based ROM.

If I were in your position, I would wait and see what Q1 has to bring (or see my last statement). Should be lots of nice phones in the pipeline. The Tegra 3 is about a year old now, the S4 dual core is a beast, but it's quad core cousin, along with a much improved GPU is showing up in a few devices already.

If you're purely looking at specs, neither the S3 or One X+ has the latest and greatest. It sounds like that's all you're comparing at this point and that's a terrible way to choose a phone. Go play with a few and see which one you like best.

Take a look at the LG Optimus G while you're there. Spec wise it blows both of those phones out of the water. ;)

*edit

Forgot you're on ATT, take a look at the Nexus 4. No contract and you'll be hard pressed to find a review that doesn't praise it.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the much better phone. Much smoother, no bugs and no bloatware. The SGS3 also has more RAM.

If the HTC One X is anything to go by then the One X+ will most likely have buggy software and occasional but annoying lag. Some versions of the HTC One X can't record videos at 19 FPS because of poor camera build quality. The most commendable thing about the HTC One X is the screen.

However I think the advantages of the SGS3 outweigh those of the HTC One X.

LG Optimus G has better specs than either, but LG has poor device support both software and hardware wise. Unless you aren't concerned about that ok go for LG. Hardware support (repairs, etc) is important to me. But beside everything I'd stick with Samsung.

Eh, too early to tell, but I think LG is really trying to make a comeback here with the Optimus G, and Nexus 4 (which is based on the 'G')

He was just comparing specs, and specifically the CPU/GPU, so figured I'd throw out the option of the most powerful device currently on ATT..
