Root Removing certain/stopping certain apps from loading

I just tried this,

And I renamed the Launcher and CorpCal...can I also do it to other system services...such as Messaging since I use Handcent?

I dont use handcent so I cant be sure but I think it still relies on the stock messenger for some functions like MMS

Yep if you remove the stock messenger app it can cause problems with sending and receiving MMS...

The main ones I have seen people remove are the Amazon MP3, CorpCalendar, and email (not gmail)... Shouldn't be a problem with those three unless you use them...

Agree. The memory management is efficient enough unless something is an obvious battery and/or drain it is best to leave it alone. I stop programs like my craigslist program and Cardio Trainer what insist on running at startup as I know they are memory hogs and serve no purpose unless until I am actively using them (I use Startup Auditor). There are some esoteric processes that I have no idea how they relate to other programs (lust like some of the process on my PC although they are better documented when I do searches). All in all, if your system is running smoothly and you are getting expected battery life, don't worry about it.

Instead of renaming, my practice has been to remove (using Root Explorer) the apps I don't use from /system/app to a folder called Removed System Apps on my SD Card. That way, I have them and can put them back if I need them for some reason, but they're taking up no internal space.

I've removed the Visual Voice Mail, Amazon MP3, CorpCal, Email, Facebook, Launcher, Alarm Clock, Calculator (I use Real Calc instead), Dock (I use the desk clock), CarDock (I use Car Dock v2), all of the LiveWallpapers and LiveWallpapersPicker, and the LatinIMETutorial, all with no negative effects. I also removed Talk and Talkback (but not GTalkService or TalkProvider, which cause problems if you remove them) for a while, but put them back when I started using GTalk more. I've found that it causes problems if you mess with any of the apks that start with "Google" or end in "Provider" or "Service."

There is a nice app out there called Autostarts.. It modifies very detailed settings for when any program starts up according to certain events. Be careful what you disable and when, though.

When you put your Droid in the car dock (either in landscape or portrait mode), it replaces the lame stock car dock application with a 4-screen launcher, and you choose which 6 oversized apps/shortcuts you want on each screen (or only on the main default screen). You can change the icons easily, as well.
