Ok i have a few questions. I started to root my eris and i encountered some things im not entirely sure on and would rather be safe then sorry.

First, in the tutorial sticky, do i HAVE to install eris21official-root.zip or is this where i install other custom ROMs?
If i don't install that will i not have 2.1?

Also, what version of Ivans ROM's is the right/newest one to install?

HTC Droid Eris ROM Site

Last, when i went to go check like in step 10
"10. You can test to make sure everything is working by going to a command prompt, go to the \tools\ directory of the Android SDK, and type: "adb shell". If you see a "$" (or "#" if you're already rooted) sign you're good."

I don't know how to do that, and since i don't i wont be able to complete the recovery.

Thanks for the help, i really want my phone rooted w/ 2.1

yes I do believe you have to instal 2.1officialroot....this is the rooted rom, after which you will be able to install AMONS recovery which will allow you to start installing custom roms

If you want to do it the easy way ECLIPS3 has an all in one tool that will do this for you.....if it is not on this board its over on XDA, I actually unrooted my phone all the way back to stock just so I could try this app out for him .....it is simple

No, I don't believe you have to install eris21official-root.zip first. I did just to get a feel for how to do it, but I don't think it's necessary. The PB00IMG.zip is the actual rooted image. This is indeed where you would install the custom ROM of your choosing.

Eris_Official_0.8.1T2.zip is the most recent one. (at least I hope it is, it's the one I just downloaded to try out)

This is where your dos command prompt skills come to play. Open your command prompt:
(windows key + R) then the run box opens, type "cmd" and press enter.

Now this is the part that got me at first, when you "install" the sdk it doesn't actually install anything, it just opens the android-sdk-windows folder. I just unzipped the sdk to my Q: drive so it was easier to navigate in the command prompt.

Then just I just typed "q:" then pressed enter
"cd android-sdk-windows\tools" then pressed enter
then type "adb shell" then press enter one more time

after you install the first image before the amon recovery you are rooted. however this is the v1 leak that was rooted in order to give you the recovery console in the boot loader. thats why the eris21official is installed next to give you v2. you can instead install any other rooted rom of your choice.

I'm sorry. I didn't word that clearly. (Sometimes I begin to think before I'm finished thinking:p) What I meant was that the B00IMG was the rooting image and it must be done first. But the later step where you load eris21official-root.zip, that is the ROM that you can swap out for any custom ROM of your choosing.

Thanks for catching me Dracozny
