Root How to return to pure V4 or V6 Verizon stock with only CWM recovery

The ICS update came with a locked boot loader. In order to circumvent that, a kernel with broken Bluetooth was used. Its all over the place, just look. CM10 or AOKP41 both have working Bluetooth.

Is it possible to flash a new kernel to stock ICS? Or must I flash a whole new ROM? Last I knew, most ROMs had other (more important) things that weren't yet up to snuff. Not ready to start flashing nightlies to my daily driver. I don't remember seeing anything about that broken kernel in the warning. Not that it would have stopped me.

CM10 and AOKP41 are both working pretty smoothly... their bug lists are easy to deal with at this point.

THIS WILL BREAK BLUETOOTH

We all hate EULA (I know) But YOU HAVE TO READ THIS ONE!
(Its in the script)"

As for a new kernel, it's either deal with broken bluetooth, or flash CM10. The ICS update was a POS that was buggy as hell to begin with and no one had bothered to try and fix it. Bad usbhub controls, broken wifi tether, and that damn security error screen if you remove the wrong .apk file (even after unlocking the boot loader.)

My bad. Didn't mean to say it wasn't there, only that I hadn't noticed it. I really ought to pay more attention. Thanks.

Heres a stupid question. You dont have to answer it if you dont want. I restored the v6 nandroid and now I dont have data because the phone was already on ics. Can I get it back somehow?
It depends on what you messed up. More than likely, you just need to turn your radio back to LTE/CDMA either with the menu code or with LTEon/off from the Market. If that doesn't fix it, flash the V6 baseband.

Ok, data is working, 3g mostly. But heres the wierd part: phone number is Unknown. Android version is 2.3.6 Baseband is ZV8 and SW version is ZV8. It says the phone is up to date, and lots of apps are failing to update. And I have a triangle blinking in notification bar.

Fixed. Thanks for the help, once again. I would just use the LG software tool, but the spectrum isnt supported anymore. They updated it and wont work for this any more. THANKS

What did they change? You should still be able to open the LG tool and choose "Recovery phone" to get back to V8 stock.

Hello again all. I am currently using TWRP, and have the broken out 3.0 rom installed. I was curious about it, and wanted to try it. It is running well, but my phone looks like my old tablet! LOL

What I wanted to ask was, can I use this method to get back to stock? When I got the phone, it was on ICS V8. It's the Spectrum VS920. I read the warning at the beginning of the thread, but I thought that since I was no longer running stock, with my TWRP recovery, that this method MAY work to bring my phone back to stock, V4 or V6, and then I could take updates to bring it back to V8 if I want.

Yes, I am being lazy. Always looking for the path of least resistance. Please let me know if I can or not, or if I must still use the CAB method to return to stock. Thanks again!

You could do it but would need to add an additional step of flashing the v6 baseband. I don't see why you would want to flash back to stock though. Stock on the Spectrum, especially GB, was a disaster.

I know it seems counterproductive, I am just a beginner, that's for sure. But I am gaining a greater understanding of android, and want to continue to do so. I've read about the CAB flashing method for returning the phone to stock. I think it is important to learn how, just in case.

If this method is easier to do, then great. I may use it to go back to stock, but I won't remain there for long!! You guys have me hooked on the custom rom experience.

So, I would need to flash to the V4 first, then flash to the V6 by following the directions in this thread? Is this method just as efficient as the CAB flashing method is? Again, I think it is important to see what it is like to return my phone to stock at least once in my learning experience, so if I get myself in trouble, I can fix it myself, and perhaps even be able to help someone else on here when they are in trouble. :D

Considering the 2 posters before you both lost data I would hesitate to use this. Hopefully somebody else who knows more about it will respond, but I believe it has something to do with different radios between V4, V6, V7, etc, which I don't think these files replace. I'm just guessing here, but my experience is that if there is a more reliable method (CAB) then go with that ;-)

Yeah I agree with that Nokoko, The CAB method though seems a little scary in a way. I know me, I will end up trying it anyway. That's for sure. I read the CAB flashing post; I am hoping that someday someone who has actually done it could spell out the steps in order for a meganoob like me.

I am not stupid by any stretch, I can follow directions, if they are clear and all the steps are included. I want to make sure before trying it that there isn't a "you are supposed to know that (LOL)" step missing.

For example, it says "Remove your battery and remove your memory card. Reboot your phone in download mode (re-insert your battery and replace the back plate)." Someone like me that follows directions to the letter wouldn't replace their memory card, because it doesn't say I should. See what I mean?

When experienced people write directions, sometimes they automatically assume certain things and don't include them in the written instructions. It's definitely not intentional, but it happens. And since doing the CAB method deletes your recovery partition........ I want to be CERTAIN all the steps are there. Do you know how to do it, or have you done it before? :questionmark:

Actually, you don't want to replace the memory card to avoid any possible data wipe on it. As for the rest, if you get to the part where it's flashing the phone and actually writing data, then you are in a safe spot. Just don't disconnect the phone before it says to.

I was hoping to hear from you about this NEPH. So the directions ARE correct? Now I feel like a real A hole. So sorry......

OK then, do not replace the card until the entire procedure is completed. Got it.

So be honest. Is it stupid to practice doing this? Or should I feel fairly confident performing this procedure? Everything I've done so far has worked well; don't want to ruin my perfect record. It seems that the cable and computer I am using are performing well.

Bottom line: I just really feel that it is important to know how to return to the beginning, in case there is a problem with my phone.

Or is there a danger of corrupting any of the partitions by going back and forth like this? It guess it seems crazy to want to do this, but I feel that if there is a way to get out of a bad situation, I want to make sure I am comfortable with the steps. Call it disaster resolution practice, I guess.

In any event, someone else may need guidance as well, and I will be able to jump in and help too, if necessary.

There really is no reason to do this unless you're fixing a really bad move of formating the wrong partition. In almost all situations, if you have CWM Recovery installed and can get into recovery, you're going to have better luck fixing your phone as you have ADB access. Cab flashing really should be a last ditch effort. Heck, even downgrading is done now via flashing an older rom and radio file.

Damn, do you ever sleep? LOL (I don't, as I get older I need less and less).

OK, understood, I see your point. It's always good to know though that it is available for disaster recovery. Since I have your ear for a moment, is there someplace you can point me to that explains the structure of android programs? Where can I go/what can I read up on to gain an understanding of the process? How it all basically works.

I want to learn more. I want to be able to do some programming/development someday, but you have to crawl before you can walk. Any ideas?

Next I am going to try the "beanstalk" rom. I should be able to flash that rom out of TWRP, as long as I wipe, (running the old broken out spectrum 3.0 right now). Once again, thank you so much for your time.

I guess the first question is programing what? Are you looking at building a ROM or at .apk files that run on the system?

If you're looking at building a ROM, I would first start with some of the basic build guides that Cyanogen have posted. From there you can branch off into themeing and customization.

If you're looking at programing, google has what appears to be a good primer written up on their own server.

Also, what is this sleep you speak of?

I am not sure, I clearly remember my parents telling me I needed more of it (sleep), but they never really told me how to get it, or if there was a special place whereI could go to get it. I feel slighted that they ignored this while I was growing up. LOL

Alright so I am thinking of doing this so I can force Verizon's hand and get an upgrade. The deal, I was right at my upgrade deadline when they changed the rules. You can't upgrade until you reach end of contract. So I wanna go back to v6, take the OTA and go on with life. Will that work? At one point I thought there was a flash that we could push through CWM by renaming the file to update.zip. Haven't found that thread and it may have been what I used in my tablet. LOL

Why go back to V6 and take OTA? If you are going back to stock, just use the LG Mobile support tool and do "Recovery phone" or options -> "Upgrade Recovery" if you're on the newer version. It's the easiest way to be on pure stock with the latest update. I just can't see why anyone would want to go back to stock, sans thinking about getting their phone replaced for warranty work.
