Hi I was reading a while back someone's topic about if a microSD card can enhance the performance of HTC Hero.

I'd love to look it up but I cant, this site isn't going well lately, and I'd have to reload each page 20times to get to actual topic

Can anyone answer my question? I'm about to get My Hero lol

Connect/mount your Hero to your computer, click "My Computer" and you should see your Hero SD card as one of the accessible drives. Right click on this and click Properties and within the info you'll see if it's FAT32 or NTFS.

If it's NTFS, you'll need to re-format the SD card as FAT32, but as formatting the card will delete all the data on it, you need to copy the content first.

To do this, create a folder on your computer and copy all of the stuff from your SD card to this folder. Then right click again on the SD card drive from your computer and select Format and make sure you pick FAT32. The copy all the files back on the SD card and you're good to go

Make sure you have Hidden Files viewable on your computer, say all files are copies across between the SD card/computer. (See here of how to do that > How to see hidden files in Windows Vista)

Any type of Memeory card should be correctly formated to "FAT32". You can support the Hero by buying a higher class Memeory Card. When you purchase your memeory card you will notice a little circle with a number inside; The numbers can be either a 2,4 or 6. Class 6 are the highest quality and can read data quickly, but ofcourse cost more. Reviewers normally don't mention this but the class 2 (supposed) comes in the box is a little too slow for supporting the Hero. (Generally if there isn't a class logo on the memeory card than it's normally classed a 2.

Class 2 = It fairly copes.
Class 4 = Can read the cache files created on the memeory card faster.
Class 6 = Can read the cache files quickly when needed.

The card rating is merely an indication of the minimum transfer speed guaranteed e.g Class 2 = 2MB/s, Class 4 = 4MB/s, Class 6 = 6MB/s. Branded cards will often exceed their nominal 'class rating' comfortably.

Another factor to consider is fragmentation; as more data gets written to the card this will increase and can slow down write speeds, so a faster card can compensate. Larger capacity cars may also have better wear-levelling logic onboard, prolonging their life if many writes are performed.

As for formatting, any card with a capacity larger than 2GB will come formatted as FAT32. The easiest way to ensure compatibility with your handset however is simply to format a new card using Settings - SD card.

Note that the card rating only applies to the speed at which data is written to the card, read speeds for any class of card tend to be well in excess of the write speeds for even the fastest rated cards.

So a faster class of card will only speed up your Hero if youre running an app that writes a lot of data to the card. e.g. camera (anyone know if the web browser caches data to SD?). Apps that only read from the SD card wont (e.g. music player) wont notice any difference.

Do a reboot, and check out the the running app list immediately after. That's probably a good indication of what stuff the phone needs to have running in order to function properly (although i suspect there may be a few things that arent really necessary for everybody).
