Root Please help: Programs are using battery without being turned on

My apology if I miss the answer in some other threads. I didn't have this situation until Twix and now, DOTS. When I check "Battery use", I see a bunch of programs in there, without turning them on or using them like Android OS, Media, Swype, Market, Dialer ... In Twiz, even when wifi is on, it won't actually connect unless I manually connect it and it disconnects when the screen is automatically turned off. I had great battery life.

I drained the battery and recharged before I flashed ODIN. I pretty much did everything the same way as the previous times I flashed a new rom. I drained the battery again but that didn't seem to help.

I installed Advanced Task Killer. A while after I kill selected apps (a long list), the apps tend to turn on on their own. I had unchecked "Background data" but that didn't help either. Wifi connects unless I literally turn it off. (That wasn't the case.)

Is there a few check marks that I miss? Thanks for your help.

I was on twiz then twix and now dots (previously galaxy roms...). I have found Spare Parts (from the market) to be my friend.

At times the phone does not sleep correctly. I can kill all the apps I want and it will not make a difference. When the phone is sleeping properly I can leave apps running and they do not hurt anything.

I updated to dots last night and got everything configured. I purposely did not plug in my phone overnight but did make sure it was able to sleep. It used about 15% battery last night and I do not get great signal in my house.

When the phone is not able to sleep I do a power down and then power it back up and this normally fixes it.

I have not been able to figure out what is causing the sleep problems. I have the same apps installed on my N1 and it sleeps correctly.

One issue I have seen (and this issue is not with just the behold II or specific rom, I have seen the same issue reported for the Galaxy) is that if you have wireless location enabled it has a very strong tendency to prevent the phone from sleeping. Even if you turn it off the phone does not sleep until a restart. Using GPS location does not seem to cause the same issue.

Experience has shown me that 99% of battery life issues are because android does sleep like it should.

Android (Linux for that matter) is not like Windows, people need to learn the difference between them. I'll give you a brief overview, since someone did and thinking the new way has increased my battery life. Android uses placeholders for tasks that it thinks are the most likely to start next, this is why you may see apps that you rarely use when using a task viewer. It is simply a placeholder and will not use cpu cycles, battery and will close down automatically (factory task killer) if the memory it is holding is needed. Where as Windows only loads services and programs that are set to run, Android holds memory so it is more efficient when that program is called. So running a 3rd party task killer is pointless (I do use it if I can't kill a program that has hijacked GPS when I don't want it on), as Android has a built in task killer built in. If you don't believe me, get Spare Parts from the market, and set the Activity/Process management to aggressive. It gets so aggressive that it kills the App Launcher after every process is called. Now the people who run the auto task killers are worse off, since the cpu is constantly searching for and killing tasks that the OS is trying to re-open.

So please don't use the task killers, they really aren't helping.

Also remember to reboot after every recharge, since there is a sleep bug that won't allow proper sleep.

Thank you all for your replies. Yesterday, my phone's battery went from a 100% to 78% within less than a hour. I tried to drain it so I turned on GPS and played youtube videos until I fell asleep. This morning, battery was at 23%. I thought the battery would be drained soon after. It is now 5:21 PM and battery is at 8%. I guess it's fine now.

As suggested, I have uninstalled the Advanced Task Killer. Thanks again.

Advanced Task Killer is utterly useless imo, no offense to the creators, but android automatically stops services to free up memory for the next program.

I know Android is supposed to do that, but I very frequently find myself with only 40-60mb of free memory if I let the phone run long enough, and especially if I run a few apps throughout the day. Things start lagging really badly if I don't manually end processes. I was using Taskiller Free on Twiz, and was getting 17+ hours of battery life with moderate usage. I never came close before that rom, and I haven't since (I went to Twix, Dots, and now WarHeads). Today was my first full day on WarHeads, so I'm hoping it gets better with it's second charge, but I got less than 12 hours with pretty minimal usage today.

Update: I just checked, and I'm currently showing 75mb of free memory. I ended all tasks after a reboot (Showed 117mb free when I did that), and it's been about 15 minutes with the phone sleeping. The only apps that I've installed that aren't stock with the rom are the Dolphin Browser, Handcent, and Taskiller Free.

if the taskiller is not the one that came with the WARHEADS ROM, then you're better off deleting it. that is probably why you are seeing problems with battery draining while your phone's sleeping (showing 100% Android System). also, d/l SpareParts like chadmd suggested and set the activity/process like he said.

The devs who make those task killer apps use a windows mobile type memory scheme ... so it always shows you have less than you actually have .... if you guys would find some time to run ddms which is found in the SDK in the tools folder , you can see a true memory map of your device .. Then you will realize how much time and MONEY you wasted on those apps .... The best way i have found so far is using Autokiller ... Its NOT a task killer , but fine tunes the builtin memory manger .....
Like it was said before ANDROID is very efficient when it comes to memory ...spareparts is a dev tool and has the same feature as autokiller, but autokiller gives you more control as to , how aggressive you want it to be ... there is also minfree (paid app) which does the same thing , dont know if it still in the market ...
Like Chad said PLEASE people STOP THINKING windows mobile when using an android device ... the memory map is very different , and that one of the reasons that windows mobile cannot be ported to an android device....
BTW bionicgrape that memory reading you get has nothing to do with the system memory .... with all them apps running on PLEASE run ddms so you can see your true free memory ... you will also notice on the log something called GC ( garbage collector ) constantly running , this is the android memory manager reclaiming unused memory .....

Also run logcat in a shell on your PC, its really neat to see everything going on on your phone, even when it sleeps!
