My VM Awe downloaded a Sprint AWE Software Enhancement in the background. Since it is an activated VM phone, this seems a little weird.

OK. My wife's stock AWE also downloaded the update. The update provides a new Kernel.

Kernel Version - 3.4.0-svn10896 to 3.4.0-svn13023

SW Version - N800V1.0.0B05 to N800V1.0.0B06

I have look and it seems that it adds straight talk support, the awe already has support for sprint, boost, and virgin mobile

I purposely went and downloaded it the other day but regretted it. I liked the stock version with older Maps and Google Music, and also it seemed more sluggish to me anyway. I reinstalled the stock rom that brittnearl put up (thank you) but now it seems like I'm getting a nag screen that I didn't before, not sure, but I hope it quits. It automatically downloaded the package again but I deleted it out of cache.

Now I have, Kernel Version - 3.4.0-svn7986
SW Version - N800V1.0.0B04

Nag screen???

More like a popup window. Won't let me take a screenshot of it but says System Update at top, an explanation of the enhancement software then at bottom gives you choice of install later, more info, and install. Has only done it the last couple times I restarted but otherwise hasn't done it anymore. I tried unticking notifications for some stuff and uninstalled My Account as well as other bloatware that I was eventually going to do anyway. Everything's cool:)

My update on my awe failed too for the same reason.

It worked fine on my wife's awe, though now that I think about it, at that point she had the original stock recovery.

I was attempting to install with a flashed original stock recovery from the forum as I typically have TWRP installed.

To clarify an ota update will only work on a stock rom device, the zip i posted tricks the device into thinking it is updated, all the update adds is walmart support

Yes, I figured that I would need stock rom; but that is the weird thing, I only have rooted the device and installed custom recovery (then flashed back to stock recovery for update).

It should have worked, right?
Any extra/modified system apps/files will cause update to fail as it verifies system integrity, the update doesnt add anything worth updating so just flash my fix:)

Has anyone done the update and noticed any downsides? We have 2 phones, both stock, and both are nagging us.

I'm worried about the carrier (VM in our case) making things worse, of course... specifically, torpedoing easy wifi tethering which I rely on.

On a rooted device is there any way to clobber the nag screen?

You could try the ota fix that was posted and it may work AWE Inspired Moonshine2.9 is based off of stock so it should work for you as well. Make a backup with twrp first to be on the safe side.

By walmart support you mean access to straight talk towers or?
Straight talk doesnt have their own towers... Their are 4 major providers: sprint, verizon, att, and tmobile in the us... All other providers are subsidiary to them... So it could b both virgin mobile through walmart (sprint in other words) or sprint throught straight talk..as straight talk uses all towers based on phone type
