Help Best app killer/manager?

So... I love my Droid Incredible. Compared to my Storm, I feel that if it had feet it would be able to walk across the Atlantic without getting them wet.

In any case, my Storm could multitask - but there were no apps worth using for one, and the thing was such crap that it would crash if there were more then four open. That most certainly isn't the case with the Incredible, but I've encountered a different problem when it comes to multitasking: battery life.

So I've been using Advanced App Cleaner since I got the device on Friday, but I'm so new to Android OS that I don't know if there is anything better out there. Secondly, I was wondering what apps should be kept running in the background... there seem to be a lot of background tasks.

i use an app called Quick System Info to monitor things. it's a very nice app. tells you all your storage capacities(except the 6.6gig internal) free ram, clock speed and also has logcat.

i will sometimes kill off things i don't need running, but usually i leave things alone.

i use advanced task killer. dont kill the weather,clock or message other wise even though you might see an alarm set at the top of the screen if you kill the clock it won't go off

If you want a downward spiral to you hating your phone, force closers and lag, then use a task killer.

Using a task killer will help you accumulate errors over time by rapidly closing multiple running processes that your phone more than likely wants running. It will confuse your phone, rendering it a piece of junk in a matter of a few months not to mention actually waste more battery life by using the processor to kill apps and free up ram that isnt using the processor in the first place.

If that sounds like something you want to do make sure you download every app killer you can find on the market and run them back to back, one after another each time after you wake it up and right before you put it to sleep. Either that or give your phone to someone that knows how to use it.

Really interesting to see this thread and some of the responses. I installed Arvanced App Killer cuz I felt eird about having a bunch of apps running that I never actually started up. Looks like im going to go ahead and delete it. Consensus says its not needed, correct?

Agreed, because t-mobile was handing out "best of the best" android apps magazine, and 2 different task killers were mentioned.

Its interesting to hear all this.

Stay away from task killers and let the OS decide what needs to be closed. Unless you know exactly what each app does and exactly what it affects and EVERYTHING that is in conjunction with that single app, I would suggest you let Android close things for you.

The bottom line is that you MAY be able to get an auto-task killer working on your phone that doesn't mess a bunch of crap up, but you have to know what you're doing to do so.

By default it WILL kill a bunch of things that will mess up basic functions of your phone. It will be impossible to troubleshoot anything that goes wrong with your phone if you have something like this running, because you won't know if it's killing a task that is important to "X" function you are having a problem with.

Tasks that are simply sitting there in memory, but are not actively using your CPU are NOT having any adverse affect on your phone like battery life or performance. Closing them actually uses your battery more than leaving them sit there idle.

If you just want to be able to look at all the tasks (and see everything so you know what's actually happening), use something like OS Monitor. You can manually kill tasks with that too if you insist on doing so, but at least it won't be auto-killing stuff on you.

General rule of thumb: If you don't know EXACTLY what something does, leave it alone.

i say use advanced task manager.
android only kills processes when its at a "critical" point.
why let it get there?
even though...i mean...we are using the incredible...
but still, i like my machine to be clean and ready.
i know how to exclude things though...

Because you don't know which tasks are relying on other tasks to function. Most apps in RAM are just sitting there. They are in memory in case they need to be used, but they aren't taking processing power and if Android needs to use the RAM they occupy, it will just write over them.

yep i have been using this for a couple days. Works nice and you can kill apps if you want.

Seems to me there are a lot of people here who say one thing and a lot who say another all claiming to be correct!

Yet the developers write the applications you can install to close down unwanted applications ALL say they are safe and will NOT corrupt the OS!

why not do what I do and ask the developers? its NOT in their interests to write applications that will eventually destroy your OS and in my experience very few write such poor app's anyway.

Don't let peoples opinions scare you into making a rash decision, think about it logically and ask some people who write the stuff before comming to any decision, how do you know the person writing anything here has ever even seen an Android device?.

After all I claim I am an Android guru You do believe ME don't you?
