Will I love a Desire even if I'm not amazingly tech savvy?

OK I fully understand if I get no replies, it is the daft question of a newbie.

I've wanted an iphone forever but not really prepared to pay a premium when other phones do the same/better job for less. However I'll always use a mac for my computing needs.

I love the look and feel of the desire though when I've had a small play with it instore. I want to be able to browse and watch some video (I like the idea of having beebplayer and a youtube function). I'm not too bothered about synching with my itunes (although there is an app for that ). I also like the way I could customise the look of it - like setting up a page of apps for my 4 year old to use and it won't look the same as every iphone.

From a lot of reading it sounds like I would need some tech knowledge to get the most out of the phone. But I am prepared to trawl websites and forums for advice. I suppose I'm worried about biting off more than I can chew.

I think you'll be fine - The HTC Desire is very intuitive and easy to use. Android still has a nerdy / geeky reputation, but that's a lot to do with the kinds of customisations you can do, but you can just as easily ignore all of that (stay away from 'rooting' threads for example lol).

The iPhone is more idiot-proof, but the HTC Desire is superior in a number of ways, and you might actually enjoy some of the freedom you have on it compared to the iPhone (you're not tied to proprietary software for a start).

I've had mine about a month now, and although I'm not tech Savvy, I have a geeky side and like learning about getting the most out of my phone. I would say, as a phone for browsing, listening to music and emailing etc, it's just about perfect.

If you want to get even more out of it than just those basics, you've found the right forum for help with it all. Everyone's really patient and gosh darn knowledgeable.

No need to be particularly tech-savvy. The Desire comes with Sense, which is particularly user-friendly and polished, more so than plain-jane Android.

Not tech savvy myself (or geeky) but i love the desire. Gives you alot of freedom in terms of customization. And now the developers are catching on we'll see some real quality apps

As far as i can tall, you'll love the desire.


also: Even though I did not know how w to root, i followed a guide on xda and on this website and it worked well . But in all fairness rooting isn't required unless you want apps2sd (storing apps on your sd card) or some other apps that require root (only one i use is marketenabler)
So you'll be just fine using the phone out of the box, it's great even then

Quite agree with the above statements and comments this is my first smartphone and am probably a lot older than most on the forum and believe me if I can get my head around this superb phone anyone can LOL

I think people reading forums like this have a skewed view of the phone, its really simple to use and understand, and non-tech savvy people can and will love it.

The fact of the matter is most people who would register and post a lot on forums like this are the tech savvy!! Or at least those who wish to be a bit more tech savvy. And we love to talk about advanced features and stuff like that

The embarrassing part is that I don't know *why* I would want to root let alone how to. But I'm guessing that is a whole other thread.

Apps2SD is the only reason I would look at Rooooting my Desire when it arrives next week. But if the rumours are true then that will be standard on the next Android revision - which presumably will be a simple update to the OS already on the Android with a few button clicks so not to worry with that!

Def recommend one, its a beautiful phone and great to use - you can get techy with it or make it as simple as you like, rest assured you'll enjoy the experience that YOU choose, the choice is yours...

Just got the new 'black' version from Orange, looks good... Root is a personal choice so have a read into it... Or not...

First thing I did with mine was load the Generic HTC ROM as Orange have gone overboard with the customisation, want it as the manufacturer intended, not the Network...
