I've just joined the droid set from blackberry. The only thing I miss from my BB is their own IM. It was awesome and meant free communication so I did not need to use SMS.

How good are the IM programmes for android that will work with others like blackberry and is there a recommendation for a preferred messenger such as yahoo or MSN?

Cheers

But does it work with non android phones?
Yup. It'll work across any smartphone/platform, as well as pc, mac, linux, etc... Google Talk is just like any other IM service like AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, Jabber etc... Pretty much every smartphone or computer has a client (if not multiple clients) available that will support them. Most users tend to get an all-in-one client so that you can chat with any of your contacts regardless of which IM service they use. eBuddy and Meebo are two popular all-in-one clients with the Android platform.

Sorry - not clear.

With Ebuddy you make an Ebuddy account and within that you set your MSN, AOL, etc, login names and passwords. Yes, you still need to have an account for each.

Ebuddy then logs you in to all of them at once.

You can create MSN and AOL instant messenger logins using your gmail/googlemail address as well - all three of mine are the same (brykin**s@gmail.com) so I am easy to find, but Ebuddy keeps them all together in one app.
