MyBackup Pro vs. Astro for restoring apps 2.1

Hi. I'm wondering if anyone can speak from experience as to using MyBackup Pro or Astro to backup and restore applications on 2.1? Any pros/cons to either?

I'm preparing for the impending upgrade from 1.5 to 2.1 and would love to save a bunch of grief in installing and mostly setting up all of my applications (I have a fair amount).

- Do either of these apps allow run on 2.1 and allow you to restore a backup created on 1.5?

- Do either store your settings within an app as they backup/restore?

I have a lot of settings for things (like Chomp SMS, Quick Profiler, Missed Reminder, Klaxon alarm, etc.). It would take a long time to remember all the things I did to set those up the way I like and redo them all.

- Would either backup and restore all of my text messages in Chomp SMS instead of just the app?

THANKS! Everyone is just saying 'redownload the apps from the Market'. Well that's fine (even though it would take quite a while for me). But that doesn't help restore all of the settings or especially all of my text messages. I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of bummed out regular phone users when they accept the update and find everything missing upon restart.

You wont be able to receive updates for your apps if you restore your apps using Astro. Just redownload from market. Unless you are rooted, then use titanium backup

I asked the same question, and someone told me astro can get updates for backed up apps and now I'm hearing dont use astro so which one is it?

Astro DOES NOT allow apps to be updated. It doesnt reinstall the market links. I'm not sure about mybackup pro. check with someone that has it or the dev's site.

I heard that if you're already rooted when you back up your apps and you restore to a rooted phone you will get the updates on Mybackup.
But backing up on non rooted and restoring on rooted you wont.
Mybackup screwed up settings on my phone when restoring the data part... my HTC widgets were't available and I had to reflash my rom twice. Happened twice before another member told me it was Mybackup causing it
Might have just been a freak glitch that happened to a few of us.


I like astro because it's simple to use. Then i take my time re-installing the apps over time if i even care about possible updates.

Yeah, mybackuppro caused a bunch of crazy shit to go wrong with my contacts too. I bought titanium backup, haven't had a problem since. But you have to be rooted.

mybackup works pretty well as far as restoring apps and contacts for me... just don't restore settings... thats where things took a turn for the worse...

what about lookout? does this work as well as mybackup pro? i definitely want to back up my contacts - google syncing is weird. but want to back up my apps and whatnot as well when i upgrade.

But even with Mybackup upon restore you will not get updates for your programs. The best way to restore apps for a non rooted phone is through the market. I used MyBackup for programs that I couldn't get in the market anymore. You also have the option to select which programs you want to restore.

Dang, I backed up all my apps with Astro. Didn't know about not getting updates.
I'm gonna use this new/old app to back up my apps. It's called a pen, and paper. I'm just gonna write down all my apps, and if the OTA wipes what I have off my paper, I'm downgrading to a flip phone.

lol... Astro can save you some ink and paper. Just use Astro, then use that as a guide to go through the Market and redownload your favorite apps.

I noticed the statement in the second screen shot: ...your contact addresses will be erased and can be resync'd..."

It got me thinking, resync'd with what? Did they mean to say "restored", as if by an app?
On top of that, I vaguely recall reading here in the forums, as well as another Droid-related forum, of an OTA recipient saying she/he had all the contacts restored after the OTA was successfully installed, perhaps "automatically" after some period of time passed . I'm starting to wonder if a backup app is really all that necessary. After all, the apps would need to be re-downloaded from the market anyway.

Am I missing something here?

If your contacts are in your phone as google contacts not just as phone contacts, then they will reappear after the update because they are synced online with google. Just make sure that they are synced and not just phone contacts.

They aren't Google contacts. It was only after I manually entered them as regular phone contacts that I learned about the Google thing.
So the whole "re-sync'd" thing is in reference to Google contacts only. Thanks for shedding some light on that for me!

But you can not backup "private" apps such as tv.com and ar radio. At least not with Astro.

Well, if anyone wants to know, I emailed RerWare (makers of MyBackup Pro) with some of my questions. Here are their replies.

1 - Has it been tested to work (or 'should' it work) on a Droid Eris running OS 2.1? I imagine this would be similar to the new Droid Incredible.
1) Yes. The current version has been tested, and works on Android 2.1 running HTC Sense UI.


2 - Would it be able to restore apps and settings that were backed up on an OS 1.5 device to a OS 2.1 device? Is this even recommended?
2) Yes, it should work for all non-protected applications, and quite a few system settings.



3 - Do you know if it backs up a 3rd party SMS application and all text messages? I use Chomp SMS for my text messages, and have a lot of threads currently that I would love to keep.
3) It will backup and restore SMS messages, yes.


4 - Does it store the settings for an app, or do you have to completely set your app up again after it is restored?
4) Data\Settings specific to a third party application can not be backed up or restored unless they are integrated with us. Or you have a rooted phone.


5 - If I use HTC Sync to synchronize my contacts and calendar items, would there be any potential conflict or data loss if I used MyBackup Pro to backup and restore the contacts & calendar for this reset? I'm thinking it would be quicker and easier, but I don't want to mess up the synchronization between the phone and Outlook 2007.
5) If you are using a Sync for your contacts and calendar. You should allow the sync to place them back on the phone. Using MyBackup Pro to restore your contacts will delete the existing, and replace them with the backup and in the main Gmail account of the phone, not Outlook.


6 - If I backup and then restore the apps using MyBackup Pro, will there then be no easy way to update these apps when an update is announced in the Market? Any way to 'relink' these restored apps if this is the case.
6) This is a tricky one, if you have a rooted phone and create a backup and restore on it, it will link it to the market.
If you do not have root, make sure to use the same Gmail account to activate the Android OS as the one you had when you downloaded the applications you are restoring. If this happens, some people reported it did show, some said it did not, some even said it did after they installed a few more apps.

So it looks like this last issue of having the apps be linked to the Market is one of the bigger issues. I'm wondering, though, if you manually update an app (I suppose the Market would show it as being a new install), would it properly find the app, update it, and then be in sync with the Market?
