Help Droid Maxx Bug Reports and Problems

Hi! I have an annoying problem!
As of the past two days, that is

On any normal basis, if my phone is asleep, and its taped or moved out picked up or something, it'll show the time, and a circle with either an unlock button, or a notification.

It's not doing it anymore! Is there something in settings to fix this?

Try going into settings / active display and turn it off, restart the phone, go back and turn it on. See if that helps.

Fwiw, I get best results if I leave my phone upside down on a table. Flipping it over *always* shows the notification.

I am having an issue with Wifi notifications I would love help with. I have gone into Settings->Wifi->Advanced and unchecked Network notification and Wi-Fi notifications, but I am still getting the popup to choose a Wifi network (or ignore and use wifi later) whenever I am out and about an start up an app. I really do not want this popup as it triggers the parental control software on the phone. Is there any way to truly disable it? I've tried re-enabling, restarting phone, disabling, restarting phone, and it still happens. I'm not sure what else to try?

Is it a popup or a notification in the notification shade? (A popup is something that pops over the screen as you are using the phone.) I don't recall ever seeing a popup from a wifi network with those two settings turned on. A notification, yes. (But maybe I'm remembering that wrong.)

Are you sure it isn't the parental control software that is doing the popup?

Is it any app that you try to run or a particular app?

What happens if you temporarily uninstall the parental control software? Do you still get the popup?

I never saw that notification when I disabled the settings (which I did because I didn't want to see the notification at all.)

It is the pop-over screen that lists the Wifi networks in the area when you start up an app that uses networks. I hope that makes sense. It also has a button at the bottom to not use wifi now. I've not figured out a pattern of which apps trigger it, but it's definitely more than one (I do know Minecraft is one that definitely causes it but not sure of others). Of course do not see it at home since I have my Wifi set to automatically connect.

It was definitely present before the parental control software was added, so I'm sure it's not the parental control causing it.

Oh, and which parental control application is it?

It is Qustodio parental control software. The reason it becomes an issue is because I have Qustodio set to block access to the phone Settings, and it considers that popup to be part of settings.

I must not use any apps that do anything like that.

If you go into the settings for the app Minecraft, does it have a setting to ask you to use the app only on WiFi or to allow use on cellular networks (or anything like that)? I don't have Minecraft (obviously) so I can't check myself. I can see a game giving you that option, in order to prevent heavy cellular data use.

What happens if you toggle WiFi off when you want to use an app like Minecraft? I suppose that you could use an app like Llama to look for when you are away from home and toggle the WiFi radio off and then back on when you get back home.

One last question: in the wifi advanced settings there is a setting that says something like "scanning always available". Does it work any better if you turn that option off? (That setting leaves the WiFi radio on even when you toggle it off so that it can be used for location services.)

I checked Minecraft, no settings for Wifi only (which was a good idea). I have turned off scanning so we will see what happens. I just had it pop up about an hour ago when I unlocked phone and immediately opened Hangouts, so there's another app that triggers it. We'll see if the scanning makes any difference!

I used hangouts and I *never* saw a wifi popup.

Are you sure it's not some weird setting in the parental control app?

Do you have any other system apps that might be doing this?

I'll poke around some more in the data settings but my Maxx isn't activated for data anymore so I'm not sure if I'll see anything.

Thanks for trying! :) Yeah, I'm sure it's not parental control. This popover has been happening since I had the phone if I'm out and about in public, it's just now become an issue with adding the software.

I did do some more general Googling on it and it's possible that the issue could be Verizon. Apparently on many phones, they've disabled the ability to really stop this pop up (even though the setting is there it doesn't really work). So, I'm also gonna try calling Verizon to confirm.

I just want to repeat: I used this phone for over two years, on Verizon, and I never saw a popup notifying me of a WiFi access point.

I'm sorry to say that I really didn't see any settings in settings for data or for mobile data that somehow cause popup notifications for WiFi networks.

I also want to verify: the phone that you have is a Motorola Droid Maxx; that if you go to settings / about phone that the model number is listed as "Droid Maxx" and that the Android version is 4.4.4 (just to make sure that we are talking about the same phone model - the use of "Maxx" with the word "Droid" can be many phones; the Droid Razr Maxx, the Droid Razr Maxx HD, the Droid Maxx, and the Droid Maxx 2, which is very confusing).

In reading about the parental control software I believe that I saw that it uses a VPN so that it can control and report on user activity. I am wondering if that is the issue? I pay for a VPN service but I don't have it installed on my Maxx - I'll try installing it later and see if that may be causing the popup for some reason, or if there are some VPN settings that cause this to happen.

I do hope that you figure it out. If it were me and I was trying to diagnose this issue, this is what I would do:

1. Restart the phone in safe mode. (See http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-83030/#enab ). This generally rules out an issue with third party apps, as safe mode disables most of them on startup. If there is an app doing this, it could be a useful diagnosis. If you still see the popup, though, then the next step would be

2. Uninstall the parental control software. I guess that you can tell that I still am suspicious that the app is causing this issue, and you can always reinstall it later if you verify one way or the other that this is the issue.

3. If it is still happening - I know that this is drastic - but I would strongly consider backing up all of your photos and videos, and contacts if they are not syncing with Google or Verizon Backup Assistant, and then do a factory data reset to wipe the phone to new conditions. Get the WiFi advanced settings set up as you mentioned earlier. Reinstall all of your apps except the parental control software and see if you get the WiFi popup. If not, then reinstall the parental control software. hen see if it is working properly. Sometimes that is the only way...

Again, good luck, I am very interested to know if you get this solved and how you did so!

Good morning!
Avid reader. Having two frustrating issues. First is the whole "restart camera" thing which apparently nobody on the web seems to know what's flying other than the fact that it seemed to start somewhat recently. Second issue is the dumb stock NFL mobile app that comes with phone and can't be uninstalled, nor truly disabled. I've been dealing with annoying notifications for at least a year in the drop-down but apparently it's been eating data too! Any advice without having to finally root the phone?

I am not aware of what you are referring to. My camera works fine. I do know that plenty of people report camera issues but they persist after a factory data reset and are therefore hardware problems with some part of the camera system. Bad news, but it happens.

Settings / apps, slide to all, tap "NFL Mobile" and tap the disable button. Mine has been disabled since day one (though I have to re-disable it with android version updates or after a factory data reset.)

The camera one seems to be more common these days, if you Google "Droid Maxx camera error" you'll see a bunch of issues in Verizon community. I can also take a screenshot for you to see if you'd like, but I definitely hear where you're coming from about it probably being hardware-related.
As for NFL mobile, I've disabled it numerous times but it keeps persistently re-enabling. No worries though, thanks!

Droid Maxx
System info
Screenshot_2016_05_07_17_21_27.png

All audio sounds like a skipping CD.
Videos pause themselves nonstop.
When turning volume up or down during this, there are two identical volume bars on screen, it flickers between them and they adjust at different speeds. One seems to do nothing whole the other actually adjusts volume.
Have hard reset, soft rest, booted in safe mode, cleaned head phone jack, rubbed around speaker, messed w audio settings, downloaded audio managing apps, airplane mode enabled and disabled, wifi on/off, bluetooth on/off, bluetooth speaker, aux cords. Nothing has worked yet, except for a cassette with aux cord from China, it didnt work with other phones (quality was diminished) but it worked for my Maxx. That's now broken so I have zero functionality of my audio.
*I also have Audio Effects disables. I tried SoundAbout, didn't work, but I did find out the ear piece does work however it still does the choppy/skipping but it sounded more like the volume jumping up n down than just blanking out.
So it seems to me its a combo of the volume jumping mute to max nonstop and swapping speaker and earpiece functionality nonstop. I tried the Equalizer app and first thing when I opened it, it said there was another thing running and to uninstall/disable it, that would be Audio Effects which has been disabled for months.

My headphone jack stopped working right within the first year. It was definitely a hardware problem - I had to start using Bluetooth when I wanted audio. If I were you I'd try a factory data reset *without* restoring data or installing any third party apps and see if audio skipping, etc. was still happening then, to rule out software issues. If so, maybe it's time for a warranty replacement (if it's still under warranty) or a new device.

That's no good.
Yeah, Bluetooth doesn't work either.
When I first got it I reset it twice before I even added anything to it.
I didn't buy it new so no warranty. I only spent $35 on it so I figured if there wasn't sound that wasn't so bad bc of what I paid and I can't afford $200 for a new one so I guess I'll just have to live with it if its hardware.

Hey Thom, this is Thom....with the H. New member. Opened messaging to text one day last week and the on-screen keyboard changed. New version has grey background but features seem the same. I've noticed this VB appearing randomly in my texts or anything I compose, such as email. I don't touch those keys and was not using caps at the point VB appears. Annoying at least but at worst it looks like I don't pay attention to detail. I wasn't given the choice of converting to this new keyboard. Any clue?

The default Google keyboard had an update in the last few weeks that is rolling out to phones. It was probably auto updated in the Play Store.

You can change some of the settings in setting / language & input - tap the settings control to the right of "Google keyboard". The "VB" you're referencing may be something in "Text correction", but I'd look at all of the default settings.

You can also try going into settings / apps, find and tap "Google keyboard", and tap "uninstall updates" - that will bring the keyboard back to the way it was with the KitKat update. If you like it better this way, then go into the Play Store, go to the menu control top left and choose "My apps", find Google Keyboard in the list and tap it, and tap the (small) menu control top right and turn off "auto update" so it will no longer be updated.

Or, as Thom suggests, try another third party keyboard app like Swiftkey or Fleksy.
