HTC Evo available to upgrade customers on day 1?

I just have a quick question for the mobile gurus here. Any perspective would be much appreciated.

I am planning to renew my contract with sprint, and receive the "new every 2" credit towards my phone. I see all the madness about pre-orders in this forum... so, my question is: If I call sprint to renew my contract and order the EVO, do you think it will be available, or will the sprint rep just tell me to piss off?

Is there anyway to preorder for people who are using their "new every 2" credit? Thanks for the insight :)

one more quick question that I was not able to find an answer for after doing a quick search of the forum....

The main reason I am interested in this phone is for the ability to use this phone as a wireless hotspot connection for my laptop. It was my understanding that the extra $10 monthly fee neccesary for this phone covers the wireless hotspot function of the phone, which I believe is regarded as WiMax.

But then... I saw this article talking about "pocketspot" capabilities costing an extra $30 monthly. So what's the story. How much will it cost extra monthly to use my phone as a wireless hotspot for my laptop?

Everyone gets this "new every two". You don't have to call sprint to get it, if you are eligible then you can go to best buy or radio shack and preorder.

oh, and you need to check sprint's site to see if you are in a 4g area, otherwise you will only be able to use 3g for the phone and hotspot.

The formal answer to your question...
Yes, it will cost you $10/month for the EVO's Plan..
then cost you another $29.95/month for the wifi Hotspot for up to 8 devices on 3G/4G networks..

the back-door answer to your question...
Yes, it will cost you $10/month for the EVO's Plan ...
in a few days .. months after the release of the EVO.. the development community will have the ability to ROOT the phone. This will give you the ability to have full access to your phone's hardware power. Then load a wifi-tether software. This software will allow you to give other devices an adhoc wifi network feed to your phones internet access.
Now you have FREE hotspot access for anything you want.

PS.. I currently run it on my android hero... and a lot of others are as well. it is a well know secret :p

whaaaat.... please whisper this secret my way. I'm using the HTC Hero right now, and the ONLY reason I was intending to upgrade was for the wireless hotspot feature. If I can get it on my Hero for free... shit man. How do I use it, and where do I get it?

just found this article which highlights the 3 ways to turn your Hero into a wireless hotspot. I'm leaning towards just dropping $30 on PDAnet... Will all 3 of these options offer the same speed connection? What kind of ul/dl speeds are you getting through your HTC on 3G?

it always give me a kick.. when someone finds out about this ... awesome ability.. :D
which was always there!!! now sprint wants to charge us $30/month for...

i think you still need ROOT access for it to work though other connectivity than usb wired.

your phone can tether internet access through your usb wire. right now it should work without anything extra!!!! (if i remember correctly) do a little search.

they should all give you the same speeds...
you can get anywhere from 300kbs to 1.5kbs...
average... 800kbs

with a little more researching and some guts.... root..flash a custom ROM.... you will greatly improve your HERO.
Come on.. join the dark side!!!! :p
