Just got my Incredible and the user guide that came with it wasn't of much help. How do you:

1) lock text messages so they don't delete
2) stop the screen timeout from defaulting back to its original (ie: I keep setting it at 30 seconds, but it defaults to 1 minutes)
3) get the screen to flash, or light up, whenever I receive a message - I've turned the notifications on, but it still doesn't flash every time
4) edit contacts with more than one mobile phone - for example, my contact, Caroline, has two mobile numbers. They show up in the contact card, but when I go to edit, I can only edit the primary number...for that matter, I can't figure out how to set primary...which leads me to
5) set primary numbers

If anyone can help me with these questions I'd very much appreciate it!!!!

1. Unlike VZW's "Dumb" phones, there is no quota. Messages remain onboard indefinitely (unless you delete them). That being said, there are several apps that will allow you to create a backup of messages, either to SD card or GMail.
EDIT: Handcent will allow you to lock and backup messages.

2. Settings > Sounds and Display > Screen Timeout - but it sounds like you are doing that. I haven't had any problems. Might you have an app that is modifying the onboard settings?

3. I don't use the stock app, but Handcent has a "Screen on" option for notifications.

4. From Edit contact, go to the bottom and select Others > Add More Information.

5. Not sure what you mean by primary numbers. You can add contacts to groups. You can also set speed dial by going to the Phone application (dialer), hitting Menu > Speed Dial > New.

6. Hold down on what you want to remove for a second. You'll then have the option to move or delete it.

Rubik seemed to cover most of it but if you download handcent from the market it has a ton of options for texting. Its way better then the stock messaging IMHO.

7. I should clarify: the "people" program does not show my facebook/google contacts, which I like. The "search people" program and quick search that you mention both search everything (in fact quick search even searches the internet I believe). I *JUST* want to search my phone contacts. Possible?

3. Check out chomp sms. It's all about preference, but I like it better. Better UI, and the options don't overwhelm you.

Thanks I'll give chomp a try, and I figured out (by accident) that to forward messages and other options, just press and hold on the message itself. A whole list of options pop up.

Press and hold on the number in your contact and you will get option to set as primary.

BetterCut from the Market.
You have to create the shortcut from within BetterCut and then BetterCut will let you rename the text under the icon and also use a custom icon.

But with Sense UI, you can't edit existing shortcuts on your Home (just delete them and readd from within BetterCut).

Get a file explorer from the Market - for some reason there isn't one on Android. Astro is the most popular one.

In the stock messaging app: press and hold on the message you want to lock. Tap "lock message".
