Seems nice. But I"m doing a lot of debating on what to get (or wait for).

HTC has 8MP; flash (which is good in some situations, albeit not great...but nice if light is needed). My past 3 years has been on HTC, so I'm comfortable with their stuff.

I also want to compare memory capacity (that is, main memory for install of apps).

That'd be the Galaxy S' SuperAMOLED display. Currently the only handset listed with it, though I'm sure that'll eventually change.

As of right now the main memory for an unrooted phone is 500-and-something megs for apps (every 2.1 phone. Even the Incredible which has 8 gigs of internal storage, only 500-ish is allowed for apps).

HOWEVER, Froyo was announced today and apps to sd will be possible.


Honestly, I would wait for a phone with Froyo to release if I were in your shoes.

BTW 500 megs is actually alot. I have over 30 apps and still have 80 megs of free space (then again, I have a custom rom which is very light).

I am thinking waiting for Froyo is a good bet. But then I was also thinking that the very latest phones from HTC, and the Samsung, would likely be upgraded pretty quickly. But, I'm hanging in there.

Regarding memory: Coming from a WinMo background, that brings my nervousness about memory. Of course on that OS, even apps that install to SD use some of the main memory, and ultimately it becomes a problem.

So, do we know that being able to install to SD really gives us relatively unlimited memory real estate? Or would we ultimately run into a limitation of the main memory?

I do tend to install a lot of apps. Why else want a Smart Phone?

I would assume you would be able to use your entire sdcard but can't say for sure yet as it has not released. Could be a partition but the way they spoke about it at the I/O, I think you should be able to. Also the HTC Incredible has 8GB internal storage (Evo has 1GB but ships with a pre-installed 8GB memory card) so HTC is clearly moving to give Android phones pre-installed with higher amounts of memory and Froyo should be able to utilize it.

500 megs still is quite alot IMO. I have over 30 apps and still have over 80 megs of free space (clearing browser/market cache fairly regularly). Apps2SD would be nice tho (can add it as I have root, but it would have to be a 500 meg partitoin and my 2GB SDCard is full of music and some apps cache).

Well, let's just presume there will be data taken up on main memory for each installed app(which is reasonable considering uninstall info). I'd assume the majority of the data taken up in main memory for apps installed on SD cards would be uninstall and pointer info(like a registry). Assuming that's the case I'd guesstimate anywhere from 1KB to maybe 20KB per app. Given that most phones getting Froyo will have at least 512MB of main memory I'd say we're ok. I downloaded the biggest ROM I could and unzipped it at 89.3MB. I'll assume the ROM will expand a little further once installed, so we'll say to 100MB. That leaves somewhere in the 400MB range for apps installed on the SD card.

This is all just speculation, but even if you only get half of the main memory you're still good considering each installation should really only take a few KB in main memory. So, I'd guess you'll have enough main memory for well over 10,000 apps(if they'll fit on your SD card).
